Syaro sighed, “A double shift, and on my birthday too. Being poor is hard.”

It would have been a lovely evening with a golden haze on the hills and quaint shops preparing to close if only it weren’t so hot. Instead, the sun beat down on her, more like molten #gold than a gilded evening greeting. Even the cobblestones radiated heat.

It had been a long day. The second-shift girl had gotten sick at the last minute, and customers looking for a shady place to sit and a cooling tea flooded the Fleur de Lapin café. Iced Lapin Glacé was popular, and there had been half a dozen orders for the less popular Concomelon de Lapin. But none of her friends had visited.

She was worn out and depressed. If she were Cocoa or Chino, everyone would have dropped by without fail. Not even her best friend Chiya had come by.

She was rounding the last corner home when she glimpsed Rize darting from behind a hedge. “Oh, it’s a surprise party,” she thought, cheering up. She wouldn’t let Rize know she’d spotted him. Letting them think they’d surprised her was more important. Why had she doubted them?

A smile touched her lips, a genuine one, not her usual customer-service smile.

She paused at the threshold, breath held. She’d expected a surprise, but not like this. Golden blooms lay gathered at her feet: goldenrod, goldsturm, hawkweed, and dandelions, bright as summer laughter.

“How wonderful!” She began gathering an armful of blooms to put in a vase when her smile froze. Wild Geese, her self-invited bunny housemate, had come around the corner, a #plant in its mouth and a mischievous twinkle in its eye. Syaro’s eyes fastened on the golden yellow blossom of the tansy.

“At least Wild Geese remembered,” she said. Bitter and unhappy, she took her wildflower bouquet into the house.

Along the wall, hanging from the ceiling, in bunches or singly, the room smiled at her.

On the table stood a yellow cake, its thick whipped frosting as soft and light as a pale yellow peony, with the words “Happy Birthday!!!” in marigold letters.

All her friends began singing to the blushing Syaro.

          Happy birthday to you.
          Happy birthday to you.

Then, Syaro nearly fainted as Rize presented her with a bunch of yellow roses. “Rize...” she thought, “roses.” Her mind drifted like buttercups on a stream. All she could do was mutter, “Senpai.”

A Rescue

Pan considered the situation. While it is true, she had almost single-handedly beat the pirates (See “Peter Pan” by J. M. Barrie), she didn’t enjoy showing off. (How about a little introspection there, Pan?)

“Hay Tink, don’t you fairies have sleep dust?” asked Pan.

Tink made an excited tinkling sound and bounced up and down.

“Well, get to it Tink!”

Tink flew down and sprinkled sleep dust over the unsuspecting Usagi, who promptly fell into a deep sleep (Dreaming of having a genuine mother.)

“Come on Wendy, climb up,” Pan called down as soon as she heard the usagi snoring. (Wild Geese (Purple) was especially loud.)

And Wendy soon joined Pan and Tink.

Searching (Tinkerbell)

That left just Pan and Tinkerbell to find Wendy. Things were not as hopeless as they might seem because all of Tink’s family joined in the search and it wasn’t long before one of Tink’s friends buzzed in and whispered something to Tink.

Tink flew right off and found the tip she had gotten was correct. Below her, she could see two of the Urban Usagi guarding Wendy in a cave.

Tink, for a moment, considered trying to rescue her by herself, but quickly rejected the idea as impractical. Then she considered having her mother, the “Thorn Princess,” deal with it. She rejected that because Pan would get upset if Neverland was littered with corpses. Instead, she flew back and got Pan and they both headed off to the cave and were soon spying on the Urban Usagi.

A Kiss for Wendy

Then down, Tink swooped to see if Melon Pan had finally totally forgiven her.

”Yes, yes, you’re forgiven. Ah… sorry, Pan apologized as she shuffled her feet in shame and embarrassment. A healthy pink glow appeared on her cheeks.

“Go on,” Wendy said. “It’s okay to have emotions.”

That was the only encouragement Pan needed. “Tink, I’m so sorry. I should have listened. And I promise, even if we have a mother now, you will never stop being my best friend. Thank you for saving me.”

Pan went to hug Tink, who nimbly dodged.

In a tinkling buzz, she responded, “Sorry, sorry, no more jealousy. My bad.” With those words, she flew up and gave the startled Wendy a fairy kiss on the ear.

When lunchtime arrived, Wendy and Pan were first in.

“My medicine. Don’t forget my medicine,” Pan demanded.

Tink buzzed angrily, trying to tell Pan that the medicine was poisoned.

“It just tastes bad. It’s not poison!” Wendy said.

While Pan chanted, “La La La La, I’m not listening to you. La La La La.”

Tink in desperation flew up to the bottle and DRANK it.

Her wings convulsed, and she fell to the floor.

A cold reception

Not everyone was glad that Pan had freed Wendy. The Urban Usagi were very upset. Just when they thought they had a mother, she escapes.

The Urban Usagi weren’t the only unhappy individuals. Tink found that even though Pan had technically forgiven, she still wouldn’t talk to Tink. Every time she said anything, Pan would start singing at the top of her lungs, “La La La La La...”

After snacks, Wendy put the girls to bed for a nap. Ritzu felt lucky; She got to sleep on a pillow with Pan’s face on it

Sleep didn’t come easily for her. All the excitement of a new home & the adventures to be had

Tink wasn’t sleeping any better. Jealousy makes a poor bed companion. Then she had a plan. Seeing Ritzu still awake, Tink whispered it in her ear

“Why are wasting time? There're so many things to do. Hurry on out. I’ll tell the others where you went when they wake up”

Mother Mugi

That broke the ice, and everyone found interesting things to do and play around the new house.

Pan was delighted to have playmates again. She had been lonely since the “Lost Boys” left.

When the sun was high in the sky, Mugi called out, “Lunch.”

They hurried into the house to enjoy a feast of buns.

“I knew you would be a top-notch mother,” Pan explained, as he hungrily examined some melon pan.

Only Tinkerbell looked sour. Everyone else had radiant smiles and full mouths.

Cloud Tree

Pan soon arrived. Neither she nor Tink were happy about the crowd of kids. One wanted Wendy to herself and one wanted Pan to herself.

But then Pan smiled, saying cryptically, “It’ll be like having the ‘Lost Boys’ back again.”

“Come on, take my hand.”

Which they did and flew off into the even haze that marks the beginning of Neverland.

The first thing Pan did was take the group to the Great Cloud Tree to view Neverland. (She didn’t want to do a full tour this time.)

The dawn was near as they flew toward the waking world out of Neverland. But on the way, Wendy suddenly said, “OH, what is that!?”

Pan glanced over and replied, “That is the sakura that bloom every day, just before morning, to greet the dawn. Soon the Suzuhiko-hime will come and ring in the day.”

“Oh, can I see?”

“We have time for the sakura, but if we stay for the Suzuhiko-hime, you won’t get home in time.”

The three soon landed and marveled at the blooms that had bloomed all around them.

“What,” said Wendy. “You want me to stay here? No, I can’t do that. My parents and my sisters are at home.”

Tink’s glow, which had been dim ever since Pan had invited Wendy to Neverland now grew bright again.

Pan’s face fell and Wendy felt sorry for her, so she amended her statement, “I’ll talk to my Sisters about visiting.”

A smile returned to Pan’s face, and she offered Wendy her hand. “Let’s go, I will come back for you all tomorrow.

Pan’s House

The two bid the Plushies goodbye & accepted a packet of thickly sliced lemon cake wrapped in a handkerchief from Ma Fluffy.

Pan was grinning broadly & said, “Now, I want to show you my house.” And after Wendy took her hand, they flew off.

“Why,” Wendy marveled once they arrived, “It’s similar to my house.

“I have memories of once living in a house like this,” Pan said, “so I had it built to my specifications.”

“It’s wonderful,” Wendy said politely.

“I’m so glad you like it,” Pan said excitedly. “I hope you’ll live here & be our mother.”

When Ma Fluffy suggested they visit the neighbors upstairs, Wendy was overjoyed. The tea was nice but is a limit to how much you can drink.

The upstairs neighbors proved to be more plushies Then they asked a strange question, "Is your family adopting?" And they fluffed themselves up and put on their brightest smiles.

Plushie Family

The Quail’s tea was excellent, but she insisted on refilling Wendy’s cup as soon as it was even a little empty. The discussion also soon became boring as well. All the Quail's discussed was where the best seed was, and Wendy was glad when Pan said it was time to leave

The next stop was the Plushie family, who had a house amid a stand of blooming daffodils

Wendy instantly loved the usagi parents and thought the twin pigs were divine. Ma Fluffy served them excellent Earl Grey tea and lovely lemon pound cake. But poor Wendy felt like she was sloshing

The Urban Usagi soon left & Pan & Wend]y resumed their flight

“I think you will like the next stop. It’s the Plushie family. They’re very open, pigs dogs, rabbits, all kinds of plushies live there”

“Oh, what is that?” Wendy said pointing

“Quail Run should we stop?”

“Oh, yes. Please. I’ve never met a quail up close”

“They’re shy, but if Tink tells them we are okay, it should be alright”

Soon they were amid the quail & Wendy’s eyes were wide with wonder & delight

“Would like tea and biscuits?” Ma Quail asked
