"Bernstein’s bold covers helped define the visual identity of the disco era in all of its glory. He achieved these idealized portraits by doctoring photographs from some of the best photographers in the world such as Albert Watson, Herb Ritts, Matthew Rolston, and Greg Gorman. After serving as an art director, and often the photographer, on a shoot, he’d apply collaged elements, gouache, colored pencil, and pastel to the portrait to achieve his signature alluring aesthetic. Puffs of airbrush gave his subjects otherworldly auras and the dewy glow of eternal youth, turning iconic subjects into dazzling graphics.
Richard Bernstein enhanced their best qualities, sometimes seeming to foresee their futures in the process. In his hands, hundreds of subjects were turned into pop deities."

"He was first and foremost a pop artist and elevated commercial work to the levels of Fine Art."

“Bernstein’s faces are wonderful,” Andy Warhol once gushed of the dewy, glamorized portraits Bernstein crafted in his Chelsea Hotel studio. “He makes everyone look so famous.”
“He puts wit into the beauties, fantasy into the rich, depth into the glamorous and adds instant patina to newcomers.”

"Bernstein started with the photographic layer and worked up from there, using airbrush, gouache, pencil, and collage to create his ideals. Warhol made the famous look like they never existed. Bernstein made his subjects appear as if they had just been pulled out of a vaguely pornographic ad campaign for Austrian cookies, all putti blush and lollipop eyes."

1 • I identify as "Illustrator".
2 • I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, but everything I do begins with paper & pencil. I have to work things out on physical paper before I take it digitally. My feeling is that if I can't make an image "come alive" on paper, I'm not going to be able to do it on screen.

4 • Empathy. Taking time for kindness. That multiple feelings can coexist, not cancel each other out. Things can be cute and scary and funny and sad and sexy all at the same time. We are not our bodies, we are not our limitations. "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars" - #OscarWilde, LADY WINDEMERE'S FAN
5 • Sometimes it's just a line or curve that I can see in my mind, and, after a struggle, I'm able to express it in a physical form all the world can see.
Sometimes it's when my art points someone in the direction of music that makes their life better.
Sometimes it's when I get to work with other creators and feel part of something.
Any doors that have ever opened for me in life, it was my art that opened the door. -

Thank you for linking to Jordi Graupera's uplifting tribute to philosopher #RichardBernstein. Amazing how Bernstein continued his Arendt seminar from his hospital bed ---- and brought in the nurses as participants. And humbling to realise his generosity toward so many disparate traditions.
I know I am getting carried away, but I find that on simpler matters, discussion here on Mastodon often exhibits the same joy in the encounter with the other. Not always, but on a good day.
