  2. En 2009, Spike Jonze adaptait Max et les Maximonstres dans un film poétique, étrange et trop vite oublié. Et si c’était l’un des plus beaux films sur l’enfance jamais réalisés ? 🌿

Delightful children's tales in an old folk tradition are still enough for adults to wax nostalgic, too.

  7. I took one of the most interesting photos I’ve ever taken a couple of days ago, at Field Hut in the Tararua range.

Check out an inset of the steam wisps:

They’re spooky, and very Maurice Sendak.

  8. I just ordered a book from booktopia, which seems to be trading again with new owners after going out of business. It still looks less evil than Amazon by a very large margin.

I rarely buy books because I am an e-reader convert. Text is best in e-ink, but comics, art books etc. are still best in a physical medium.

  10. #SadGoodbyes #MauriceSendak #2012 #FreshAir

On this date in 2012, Maurice Sendak died.

If you can ever listen to Fresh Air on NPR, listen to this recap of the three interviews Gross did with him. The last one was shortly before his death.

Guaranteed to make you think and rend your heart. What a really beautiful man facing his own mortality.

  11. Sixty years ago, in November 1963, #MauriceSendak published his now famous #ChildrensBook, Where the Wild Things Are.

Did you know that the casual letterforms on the first edition #BookCover aren’t custom drawn, but type? They stem from an obscure #font named Safari which came with numerous alternate glyphs. Patrick Concannon put together a post about the #design, and @jaykay109 tracked down the origin of the #typeface. More: fontsinuse.com/uses/54045/wher

    1 • I identify as "Illustrator".

2 • I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, but everything I do begins with paper & pencil. I have to work things out on physical paper before I take it digitally. My feeling is that if I can't make an image "come alive" on paper, I'm not going to be able to do it on screen.

4 • Empathy. Taking time for kindness. That multiple feelings can coexist, not cancel each other out. Things can be cute and scary and funny and sad and sexy all at the same time. We are not our bodies, we are not our limitations. "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars" - #OscarWilde, LADY WINDEMERE'S FAN

5 • Sometimes it's just a line or curve that I can see in my mind, and, after a struggle, I'm able to express it in a physical form all the world can see.
Sometimes it's when my art points someone in the direction of music that makes their life better.
Sometimes it's when I get to work with other creators and feel part of something.
Any doors that have ever opened for me in life, it was my art that opened the door.

  13. 'Favourite Book'
Maurice Sendak wrote and created the wonderful illustrations for a children's picture book that was considered revolutionary in the 60's. It allowed the main character to express anger, fear and rebellion and was banned in some parts of the USA as soon as it was published. It also became an immediate best-seller.
