#Rats are experiencing their first #thunderstorm.
They don't seem to bothered. Råttny went to sleep and Celeste is just chilling. He's usually really hard to take pics of because they're always fuzzy. But he stood slightly still for a little bit just now 🐀🙂

I made two of those hammocks that seem to be so popular everywhere 🙂

Here are a couple of pics from the first few days of having #pet #rats in a very long time.
Last time I had pets was more than a decade and a half ago but it's nice having little friends again.
(sidenote: it's strange using the "friend"-concept for someone you claim ownership over.. feels iffy, but also this is apparently normal 🤷♀️)

Rats show empathy. When a rat is in distress, other rats will choose comforting them in favour of a treat like chocolate. Rats care about other rats.

CW: Pet Death
Cinnamon died today, the last of my rats. She was 2.5 years old, quite old for a rat. She was active and healthy until about two days ago, then suddenly deteriorated, and slipped away this afternoon. She was a serious, self contained old lady who occasionally enjoyed a quiet cuddle and would snuggle into my hand.
I don't think I'll get any more rats. The most practical reason is because we no longer have a vet nearby who can treat rats. But rats are heartbreaking to keep, they are such big personalities, so funny and loving and gentle, each one unique, and their little lives are so short.

Moments before this picture was taken, she was stuck in the "it's so good I have to eat it now, but it's also so good I have to hide it for later" loop.
Then she just decided to eat it.

Cinnamon having a bit of my porridge. It's her special morning treat, and she demands it, the little tyrant.
You can just see that her arm has been shaved because she had a mammary tumour removed last week.
She's recovering really well from the surgery, she's actually a lot more energetic now. I think the tumour had been bothering her more than I realised.

The girls have moved back into their now-upgraded, old-rat-friendly cage with new ramps and levels so they can move about safely. Old-lady rats love being at the top of the cage, but they don't always have the needed oomph to climb all the way up without a bit of help.

Dash is feeling cuddly today.
She's starting to get old all of a sudden. I'm not sure how old she is (she's a rescue) but probably almost 2. -
My rats are in a temporary cage while their home is being de-rusted and fitted with ramps and pipes to help my old girls climb safely all the way to the top of the cage.
I've tried many different methods of creating ramps and levels but this is the best by far - cutting gutter downpipes in half to make levels that they can't easily fall off of, and closed pipes for the ramps between the levels. Easy to clean, not tempting to chew on.
I'll be installing hammocks and cloth safety levels as well, and plenty of cardboard boxes for them to tear up. It's still a bit stinky from being de-rusted and painted, so I'm going to wait another day or so before they move into their new-old home.
I hope they like it!

Dash and Rose are bored and looking to be entertained.
I had to separate my mischief into two cages because the 3 new sisters are just too tough and boisterous for my 3 older rats. Especially Saffy, who's quite fragile and almost completely blind, they gang up on her, poor little thing!
I don't have space for two big cages, so I got one new small cage, and they have to take turns in the big cage. This morning the sisters are in the smaller cage and they're frustrated.
I'll let them play on the sofa just now, we've got a game where they chase a straw around, and take breaks to groom me.
I am, apparently, an absolute mess, the amount of thorough and systematic grooming I require.

Maybe because of the cooler weather, the rats have been hard at work lining their beds with newspaper scraps.
The older rats took a relaxed approach and created quite a comfortable nest for themselves. The 3 young sisters, in contrast, hoarded every scrap of newspaper in their cage and absolutely stuffed their bed so full that there was barely any space for them to crawl inside.
(I've seperated the old and young rats in separate cages because there was just too much bullying going on)

My rats are prone to respiratory infections so I regularly put them in a nebulizer to prevent them getting sick.
The older three have grown used to it, as you can see, Nicodemus is grooming Saffy.
The younger three are little drama queens and still make a fuss. See Rose spreading her little hand out like Spock in the Wrath of Khan.

I'm getting to know the 3 new rat sisters a bit better.
Rose and Dash look nearly identical, but they're so different from one another that they're instantly recognisable.
Dash is confident and in command. She'll push herself into my hand and then crouch there calmly accepting caresses, while giving me a thorough but gentle manicure.
Rose is nervy and suspicious, and quite intense. She'll insist on trying to pull my wedding ring off with her teeth, not caring if she nips me in the process. Always moving.
Cinnamon is private and a little withdrawn. She allows me to stroke her, cuddling quietly under my hand for a while, and then she's off to do her own thing. She also spits when she's annoyed! Feisty little thing 😅

Keeping my rats entertained by constantly changing their cage setup.
The latest experiment is adding an extension by attaching two cages to one another with a long pipe.
They love it. Especially Cinnamon (or is her name Kaneel? Still deciding ) She's permanently in the small cage now.
The pipe makes the oddest resonant pipe noise when they run along inside it.
I want to figure out a way to set it up so that one cage is on top of the other. A vertical pipe seems a bit dangerous. Maybe if I get a lot of elbows and make a switchback situation.

The reason Saffy has that look on her face is because I just gave her such delicious treat that she felt compelled to hide it in her cardboard box instead of eating it. She does this so that she can rush back to me and maybe get another treat. This way she gets ALL THE TREATS.
Unfortunately her strategy is off because as you can see, (note the black and white rat butt just visible behind her) the box was occupied. Nicodemus is happily eating her treat while she hopes for another one.
