CW: Asking about old rats
#Rat people: I'm planning to work with old rats 🐀🧓 for my next experiment (neuroscience). I know we have a lot of pet rat experts around here and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind listing the problems that you might have noticed in your old rats and at what kind of age these started appearing? Like - tumors, problems with locomotion, things like that. Memory problems would be very interesting too if you noticed any.
Not a very joyful topic, so of course feel free to scroll by if you don't want to think about it...

Poor Luna is not long for this world. Female rats are very prone to mammary tumors, and she has a large one. She is very old in rat years. Right after I took this picture, I gave her a morsel of cheese. She is slowly eating it, so I think she may last a few more days.

As I had an office day today and the weather is sunny I decided to walk to work this morning, for the first time in ages.
Along the path someone had set a fire to burn their rubbish (madness in this dry weather) which was still smouldering.
Still the local rats were very appreciative of have a cooked breakfast for a change!
