Honest question: where is the ‘invisible hand of the free market’ in all this? With all this demand for RAM, why aren’t manufacturers stepping up production to meet demand? What’s the bottleneck?

@kkolakowski usually I feel like developer experience gets neglected by Apple (just look at App Store Connect and all the Xcode quirks).
However, I'm wondering wether that improvement was driven by UX design instead of #RamPocalypse aka. #RAMageddon -

Wow, dieser ganze Wahnsinn mit den Preisen bei PC-Teilen ist inzwischen echt nicht mehr nur auf SSDs, RAM und Grafikkarten beschränkt!
Hatte letzten Oktober noch nebenbei 2x neue Seagate IronWolf Pro 16TB HDDs für meinen PC gekauft. Kosteten damals noch ca. 355€ pro Stück. Das identische Modell ST16000NT001 kostet inzwischen, je nach Händler, um die 700€, also praktisch das Doppelte! So langsam ist das alles echt nicht mehr lustig! Mehh! 😕

June 20: I stop procrastinating and order the new MacBook I'd been planning to get this year. ETA: July 28-Aug 4.
June 25: Apple raises prices. My configuration goes up 34% (!)
July 20: Bank declines the credit card charge. (new card issued since 6/20)
July 20: Spousey gets new CC info to Apple.July 28: MacBook arrives.
July 30: We get home from Teardown.
July 31 (today): I unbox the MacBook.🧵 1/N

On my way to #emfcamp2026 with 3x laptops for the exchange, plenty of ram in them but no hard drives (ran out of time to wipe them)
Hope they get sued for shenanigans, and that no one separates them from their chargers!

@gnome Please also include in #accessibilty poor folks who only have access to old #lowspec computers. I love the #gnome design but often have to install a distro using xorg with #jwm or #icewm for these folks. Please have options to reduce gnome memory usage to run like 300MB or lower. Lowest Ive been able to achieve is around 900MB on Alpine which was still a lot for my cousin's 3GB RAM laptop.

Finished moving my #chimeraLinux dev stuff from a GMKtec NucBox M5 Plus (AMD Ryzen™ 7 5825U) #minipc to a GMKtec NucBox K11 (AMD Ryzen™ 9 8945HS).
It's an order of magnitude faster even with the slow ass 32GB Kingston FURY Impact DDR5-4800 CL38 I'm running in that box currently because of the #rampocalypse
I did away with the full local copy of the package repository and now just NFS mount directly from my local chimera mirror server. 10 Gbit LAN is fast enough 😎.

... Find out on Tuesday after I pick the fucker up from Raven ReTek! And yes, I'm buying an older laptop because a) #rampocalypse and b) the next version of MacOS is gonna be the last one that supports Intel binaries through Rosetta 2. So, I'm going to have to jump off the Mac train anyway.

The RAMpocalyspse is certainly making the job of Linux evangelist easier these days. A good friend has a business and needed a computer for the office but was shocked by the retail prices now.
He knows that I rehabilitate old PCs and asked if I had any spares. So I set him up with a MintBook Air from 2012. He's stoked. 💚 It's his first experience with Linux & I can't wait to get his feedback. 💻️

I guess it's time to stop waiting for prices to come down. Time to buy what I need or plan to do without indefinitely.
EDIT: time to buy RAM, VRAM, SSDs. I'm not interested in Xboxen.

Lustig... AMD macht jetzt tataächlich richtig Werbung für den Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Ich bin da zum Glück raus, da ich mein System 2025 noch relativ günstig auf den kleinen Bruder 5700X3D aufgerüstet hatte. Aber ja, der 5800X3D ist schon gut, aber so ca. 229€ hätten für mich preislich eher Sinn ergeben.
