Why, oh why, didn't I get a standalone device for #opnsense sooner? It's really overpowered for my needs but that's sort of the point. Now I can stick my #iot devices into their own VLAN. The older dual NIC FW2B from #Protectli is more powerful than even the most expensive consumer networking device I've ever owned. The experience with #freebsd has been interesting as well.

Split horizon DNS is enabling me to leverage #letsencrypt for internal hosts, though I still spun up my own #pki.

If not for #ramageddon, I'd say there's never been a better time to build a #homelab. Even still, an old laptop is the cost of entry these days.

I guess we unknowingly lucked out when the kid pitched getting her "college laptop" right before senior year of HS.

I had practical tech support aspects in mind when I agreed.

I'm glad I upgraded my PC in 2023.

Got a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM from MicroCenter in an in-store deal at the time (their combo deals are insane even today) whereby I was given 32GB of DDR5-6000 DRAM for 1 penny. (Its list price in the store was $149.99.)

I just did a NewEgg search for the same DRAM kit and found it at $933.99.
