  2. Pacific Northwest Seismic Network: "Some false reports are circulating that Mt. Rainier is suddenly showing seismic tremor activity — this is not true. The signal being referenced is actually radio interference, most likely due to rime ice buildup on the antenna of one of our seismic stations."

  3. In most aspects of my life I prefer being outside, but I find outdoor residential lights rude. And shrouds aren't a thing you can buy, Amazon or Etsy.

So under MIT license, I present the Rainier solution. And the 3 stages of my partner's acceptance. (R faces us not neighbors 100m+ away)

  4. Last Thursday, Mark Skaggs was taking a timelapse of Mount #Rainier and happened to capture this #avalanche on the upper slope of the mountain.

  5. Morning #Rainier update. Earthquakes continue under the #volcano with the Cascades Volcano Observatory reporting that the activity is likely driven by hydrothermal fluids moving along preexisting faults (rather than magma movement).

Same as yesterday, I suspect part of why this swarm has produced more earthquakes than previous ones is simply better sensing equipment on and around Rainier. Still, this event is quite active.

  7. The Mount #Rainier #earthquake swarm continues. The 30-day rolling total is now 256 within 15 km. This only includes located earthquakes (ones detected by three seismographs). There are additional small earthquakes that haven't been able to be located. #geology #volcano #Washington

  9. Earthquake swarm ongoing at Mount Rainier

An earthquake swarm began under Mount Rainier early in the morning on July 8. As of 10:15 PT July 8, 81 earthquakes have been observed under the volcano as part of this sequence. The largest of these so far has been M1.6.

Earthquake swarms are common at active volcanoes. Mount St. Helens has small earthquakes almost every day and Mount Hood has has a few swarms over the last couple years.

An earthquake swarm does not mean that an eruption is imminent. Under an active volcano, magma is moving around slowly and this shifts around rocks to cause earthquakes. In addition, geothermally heated water can alter the rocks in the volcano.

Most earthquakes in these swarms are quite weak and aren’t likely to be felt by humans. A few larger earthquakes could be felt by a human but only within a few miles of the epicenter.

Monthly earthquakes within 15 km of Mount Rainier since 2000. This only includes earthquakes that were able to be assigned an approximate latitude and longitude by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

So far this is the most active earthquake swarm under Mount Rainier since 2009. During that event, 157 earthquakes were located near the volcano. The most active one in the last few decades was in 2006 when 187 earthquakes were located in a 30-day period.

It is likely that the number of earthquakes in this swarm will increase and this swarm could potentially last for a couple weeks. In fact, there have been three or four additional earthquakes since I downloaded the data to generate the chart above. It is impossible to predict when specific earthquakes will occur or how strong they will be.

It is also impossible to predict how long this earthquake swarm will last. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has about two dozen seismograph stations deployed in and around Mount Rainier National Park to monitor conditions there.

The Cascades Volcano Observatory issued an update for Mount Rainier on Tuesday morning. In addition to the over 80 earthquakes listed on the USGS website, hundreds of smaller earthquakes are being detected but are too weak to precisely locate. There are several of these a minute at times.

Other sensors deployed at Mount Rainier do not show any ground deformation or anomalous infrasound signals. There are an average of 9 locatable earthquakes a month with 1-2 swarms per year. The volcano observatory notes that “past swarms have been attributed to circulation of fluids interacting with preexisting faults.”

Mount Rainier is listed at the normal alert level with the aviation color code of green, meaning that there is no concern for an imminent eruption at the volcano. Volcanologists and seismologists continue to monitor it and other Cascade volcanoes for signs of unrest and will issue updates as needed. In the meantime, their weekly updates can be found at this link.

  10. When they said, “#PugetSound is built on #Rainier’s mudflows,” I didn’t realize they meant that there was no land where Tacoma, Kent, Auburn, and Renton currently are before the colossal #OsceolaMudflow filled in those parts of Puget Sound 5600 years ago.

  13. Here’s an early morning photo of our mountain, our moon, and Jupiter all in a line. Taken out a plane window with a phone by me, so perhaps take my word for it that it was quite lovely?
