[I still remember working on and being fascinated by lahars being an engineering geologist in Washington State (and from my time studying in New Zealand), although (of course) not to this level of detail/focus]

  6. A 22-million-year-old petrified #mangrove forest found in the Panama Canal phys.org/news/2024-01-million-

    An early #Miocene (#Aquitanian) mangrove #fossil forest buried by a #volcanic lahar at #BarroColoradoIsland, #Panama sciencedirect.com/science/arti

"approximately 1 million years after the formation of #BarroColorado Island, a #volcano erupted, followed by a #lahar, which covered the island with mud and rocks. It also covered the #MangroveForest that had grown around the edges of the island."

  7. When they said, “#PugetSound is built on #Rainier’s mudflows,” I didn’t realize they meant that there was no land where Tacoma, Kent, Auburn, and Renton currently are before the colossal #OsceolaMudflow filled in those parts of Puget Sound 5600 years ago.

  8. Via the U.S. Geological Survey, on Tuesday, a small debris flow was detected by several of Mount Rainier's lahar monitoring stations, likely the result of an outburst of water from the South Tahoma Glacier that grew into a debris flow, which isn't surprising given the current heat wave in WA.

  9. Sinuous Channels East Of Olympus Mons, Mars - Implications For Volcanic, Hydrological, And Tectonic Processes
    --
    doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2021. <-- paper
    -
    "HIGHLIGHTS:
    • [They] mapped channels and fossae within the volcanic plains east of Olympus Mons.
    • Late Amazonian channels east of Olympus Mons formed by eruptions of lava or water.
    • Fossae morphologies correspond to episodes of magmatic dike and sill emplacement.
    • Loading of Olympus Mons may control magmatic ascent processes and eruption types..."

  10. @janinekrippner Turns out this can also happen in lahars! Here's a spot on Mud Creek at Mount Shasta from earlier this year. That ropy thing USED to be a tree branch, as far as I can tell. Now it looks like a piece of kelp! #volcano #mudflow #lahar
