  1. Omniscient POV: Pitfalls and Best Practices

A surprising number of first novels land on my desk as an editor that are written in omniscient point of view. I say surprising because I find it by far the most complicated POV to get right—and it has largely fallen out of favor. Contemporary readers tend to crave a more direct and immersive experience...

  2. Why Multiple POVs Can Make Readers Love Your Characters More

Multiple POVs—should you use them or should you not? That’s a question with huge implications for your story. It will influence everything from structure to pacing to character arcs. Most importantly, it will have a huge influence on your readers’ experience of the story—for better or worse. More genre books than not use multiple POVs to […]

  3. ☀️ Yet another lovely warm summer day ☀️
I hear complains about the cold in the winter, and too about the heat of the summer. I just enjoy it, be it cold walks and building igloos in the winter snow ☃️, or recharging from the energy of the sun in the garden or at the beach. ⛱️

Life is to be enjoyed, right? Be smart, take precautions and ENJOY IT! 😎✌️

Seaweed washed up on the beach along Morro Bay. Cypress and eucalyptus trees line the shore into the distance. Beyond are sand dunes in the far distance.

  5. @SheDrivesMobility

  6. A quotation from Douglas Adams

It can be very dangerous to see things from somebody else’s point of view without the proper training.

Douglas Adams (1952-2001) English author, humorist, screenwriter
    Hitchhiker’s Guide No. 5, Mostly Harmless, ch. 15 (1992)

  7. Differentiating Narrators in a Multiple-Viewpoint Story

Writing in multiple viewpoints is a great way to explore a story from more than one angle, but it creates problems if readers can’t tell who’s talking. You don’t want them feeling lost or disconnected from the story. Whether you’re writing a dual point-of-view romance, a family saga, or a thriller with alternating perspectives, here...

  8. A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle

We all practice some form of censorship. I practiced it simply by the books I had in the house when my children were little. If I am given a budget of $500 I will be practicing a form of censorship by the books I choose to buy with that limited amount of money, and the books I choose not to buy. But nobody said we were not allowed to have points of view. The exercise of personal taste is not the same thing as imposing personal opinion.

    Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) American writer
Speech (1983-11-16), “Dare To Be Creative,” Lecture, Library of Congress, Washington, DC

  9. The Perfect Novel

After editing professionally for nearly forty years, I find it hard to read for pleasure.  Instead of losing myself in a book, the back of my mind is appreciating how the plot is structured, how surprises are being laid in, how characters or evolving.  Or, worse, I’m writing critiques in my head as I go.
So when Ruth and I were reading through Pride and Prejudice recently (reading comfort books aloud is one of the ways of coping with things at the moment), my internal editor was busy noticing all the ways this may well be the perfect novel.  Certainly, Ms. Austen did a lot of critical things very right when the novel was still new and untested.

  10. Is Single or Multiple Viewpoints Best for Your Story?

Deciding how many characters should tell your story is an important decision. Whether you’re writing young adult fiction, fantasy, romance, or any genre, this choice will determine the overall tone of the story and how deeply readers connect with the characters. So do you just need one perspective, or should multiple narrators be involved? Here...
