Astro Catalog
by Sylvain Villet
https://github.com/sylvainvillet
https://app.astrobin.com/u/SylvainV
https://app.astrobin.com/forum/topic/191541This project generates a mosaic of Messier or Caldwell objects, using images from a local folder.
The script arranges the objects into a configurable grid, supports larger slots for extended targets (e.g. Andromeda), and overlays labels and a title.Perfect for creating a large-format print.
Features:
+ Loads Messier or Caldwell object images from a folder (M31.jpg, M-31.png, M_31.tif, etc.)
+ Places objects on a grid with configurable layout
+ Supports multi-cell slots for large objects (e.g. M31, M42, M45)
+ Supports grouping multiple objects in one slot for objects close to each other (e.g. M42 and M43, M31 and M32)
+ Adds a title and progress counter if it's not completed yet
+ Draws labels on images and placeholders for missing ones
+ Adjustable size of the final image
+ Saves as JPEG, PNG or TIFFhttps://github.com/sylvainvillet/astro-catalog#features

I did some plotting for the WriteYourOwnFairytale anthology (not the real name of the book) I will be part of this September. The story is based on roll of Story Die and I got these prompts work with:
Monster, Girl in a Cloak, and Tower.
I will follow traditional fairytale formats so something will be learned, there will be magic, but I will add there a twist or two to keep it interesting. (:

The mapdata.py data explorer now has two new ways of summarizing missing data. It can also now create a Zipf's Law plot for any categorical variable. Install, update, or download it from PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/mapdata/

I made some postcards with my plotter. The postcard on the image here is consisting only of sinus functions. Math is so beautiful :blobfoxheart:

Is Single or Multiple Viewpoints Best for Your Story?
Deciding how many characters should tell your story is an important decision. Whether you’re writing young adult fiction, fantasy, romance, or any genre, this choice will determine the overall tone of the story and how deeply readers connect with the characters. So do you just need one perspective, or should multiple narrators be involved? Here...

Goal–Obstacle–Outcome cards capture the core of the moment so you don’t write scenes that drift or stall.
This works for any genre, whether you outline or discovery write. It works whether you’re drafting or revising.

In an effort to make it easier to use the large vinyl cutter at the makerspace, I created an Inkscape extension that detects when it's plugged in and ready. Help test it?

I have begun the next story. It isn’t nearly as disturbing as the last, but I realized there is actually a fair bit of grimness to it. When I first worked on it like 20 years ago, I resisted including some of the darker elements of professional sports. Now I find myself embracing them as important to the theme and character. Interesting how time changes stuff. And how most of the key story beats I knew still work. #plotting #writing

After some wild mathematical hat rendering yesterday, kicked off by @scruss and @paulrickards, I've got John Brooks' ridiculously optimized 10 line Applesoft BASIC program running on the IIe.
(Time-lapse video; the hat takes about 9 minutes to render on the 1MHz IIe.)
The listing can be found here: https://groups.google.com/g/comp.sys.apple2/c/Uc4EmM3xX88

@paulrickards @scruss I've seen this on the Apple II as well, ofc, but I can't find the code out there. I wanted to run it on my IIe.
But I can share a little fun I had with ChatGPT and its attempt to rewrite the thing for Applesoft BASIC. This is after several iterations.
I think it got tired of all that crap and said, "BORING - I want to code some demos instead!!!" Who knew GPT was a scene fan? lol

Drafting novels has become difficult of late. I used to be a happy pantser--leap in, and trust that my subconscious knew where I was going (and it did). I developed a habit of just-in-time plotting, where I'd plan out the next few chapters, have a guideline, and that kept me on track.
This worked for years, and multiple books, both original and fanfic.

Hype for the Future 9A: What to Expect from the YouTube Channels
On Days 7 and 8 of the 284-day “Hype for the Future” series, novaTopFlex has exported numerous mathematical graphs in PNG format as follows (as futoTopFlex):
In the image above, novaTopFlex was unsuccessful with executing the cotangent function (though the GNOME Genius application features cot(x) by default).
