  5. alright. since I am using my home server more seriously, it desperately needed a ram upgrade. the original 8GB (2x4) are falling short...

also, I originally got the computer with a gtx560ti GPU, which linux kernel 6.5x (or so) no longer supports. given that I am running jellyfin, that means i haven't been able to use hardware transcoding.

    that ends today.

i just finished installing 32GB (4x8) RAM, and a RTX4060 GPU. bear in mind that the mobo is Sandy Bridge based, so there's a limit on which hardware I am able to use, yet for a home server it should get the job done.

  22. Happy to report I have successfully upgraded to RX 6800 just now. There’s a complication though - the card is not fully seated into the slot. I mean it didn’t click because my case is not big enough. I got 3 fan version instead of 2 but it’s all okay.

    1. The card has all the PCIe slots fully in.
    2. It is screwed tight to the case.
    3. The only thing it doesn’t have is the lock portion of the slot is not fully in.

  23. I could with some PC upgrade advice. This is what I currently have. Here's what I think is holding me back:

    1) small SSD, I need to get a bigger one for my OS, critical files and games that run much better off SSD like Cyberpunk etc
    2) RAM, I've not touched this in a while and I'm sure I can probably get something faster
    3) Motherboard, it's not new by any stretch and I have heard good things about the intel 13900.

I don't think I'll need to swap out my 3060 yet but that may be an option one day if I need to.

    Has anyone got some thoughts?

  24. My new #SSD arrived today.

It's a Crucial Technologies T500 2gb Gen4 NVMe m.2 SSD. I have no idea if my computer's PCIe is Gen3 or Gen4. Probably Gen3, but if so it just won't be "as" fast. I'm coming from a hard disk so it's all fast.

I think I've done all the back-ups I'm going to do and it's time to install the solid state drive and attempt to clone my hard disk drive.

I'm shutting down my PC as soon as I post this message.
    Wish me luck.

  26. I'm looking at upgrading my PC to a solid state drive. Yes, I still live on a hard disk drive.

I plan to buy a Crucial SSD eventually. Crucial has a compatibility database that shows their RAM and SDD products that work with my Dell Inspiron model.

It shows the SSD I want, but with no heatsink. The compatible parts list doesn't list the version with heatsink as compatible.

Maybe they just don't list it because they think heatsink is superfluous on my model?

  28. The PC upgrade begins. First ITX build and set up a rough layout to get lengths for custom PSU cables. MB and PSU are partially screwed in, but the GPU is just a cooler since it’s sitting in my custom loop PC tower right now.

Never built an ITX system before, so this is fun. Doublechecking every dimension of every component for compatibility is a fun exercise. Cables should come in a couple weeks and I'll update this thread then. #pcupgrade #pcgaming #itx

  29. Ok let's get some gaming PC upgrade recommendations. Already updating my power supply to a 1000w and CPU to Ryzen 7 5800x3D. Have a 5700xt GPU but want to update. Thinking a 6800XT? Thoughts. #pcgaming #pcupgrade #gpu

  30. Decided it was time to get a #PCUpgrade and we're still in an age where the only realistic way to buy a GPU for a reasonable price is in a box that also contains the entire rest of a computer, so for the first time since my first self-built PC in the 90s, I started looking for a systems integrator to build me a new box. My main criterion was an AMD build for CPU and GPU. Nearly every integrator was only offering Nvidia GPUs, so I ended up going with #CyberPower.

What a goddamn comedy of errors. All seemed to be going well at first- I was asked if there was anything special they could do in the build and as I had plans to add more storage asked them to please prestage a SATA power and data cable to a 2.5" drive mounting point. "OK", I was told.

Fast-forward to yesterday, the PC arrives. Yay. Yay?

    Not so yay.

As I'm removing it from the shipping box (which was gashed; thanks UPS), I hear a loose screw bouncing around inside the chassis. So I crack it open to remove the shipping foam and hunt down the errant screw, and find the following:

    • Many loose connectors, including but not limited to the AIO pump
    • The SATA connectors were not prestaged
    • I paid a $20 line-item for "professional cable management" which apparently was code for "instead of a loose rats' nest of cables crammed into the drive cage, we will give you a very tightly zip-tied bundle of cables that are not routed though the conduit built into the case but just strapped to the motherboard tray and a rats' nest in the drive cage. This was mooted by the fact that I had to cut out all the ties to be able to reach the loose connectors that needed to be properly seated.

A couple hours later, woo, time to fire it up. No POST, or so I thought. Turns out it was only putting out video signal from the motherboard and not the GPU. Fine. But no BIOS setting I configured would give me a video signal from the GPU.

Okay, I'll deal with that after I get the OS set up. So I let it boot to the M2, and start the Windows OOBE, and... bluescreen.

    Reboot. Blue screen.

    Hm.

Reboot again, blue screen again. Check the BIOS- nothing super-hot, all temps look nominal; no overclocking is set up. As I'm staring at it, it spontaneously reboots again.

So I spend a couple hours pulling the PSU from my current, working, computer, and swap it into the new one in case it's a power issue, but no joy. Booting Linux from USB also throws a kernel panic within 90 seconds.

So I throw the original PSU back in, and just in case the seeming brick of a GPU is the problem, pull it out. No change.

If this is the state of buying a supposedly ready-to-use gaming PC these days, no wonder consoles and Steam Decks are so popular.

At least they replied to my support email in which I requested they either replace the machine or refund my order. Looks like I get to try another builder, presuming the refund actually comes through in a reasonable time.

Can anyone recommend another integrator I could look as I really would rather not spend the time building it myself this time around due to the "Getting A GPU While Not Being An OEM" tax that is still being levied.

  31. Currently having a debate on whether my husband and I should spend ~$3000 to upgrade both our PCs.

    Current PCs are:
    i7 6700k cpu
    Nvidia 1060 6gb vram
    16gb memory

    Upgrade would be:
    i7-12700k cpu
    Nvidia 3060 12gb vram
    32 gb ddr4-3600 memory

Along with matching motherboard, case, power supply…

*Mostly* for playing with personal stable diffusion art projects with D&D/Pathfinder… but maybe future gaming?

  32. Finally got my 6900XT to replace my rx480 (the original one with 4gb vram). #AMDRadeon #pcupgrade

  33. Just joined the #ultrawide gang. 1440 is a pretty noticeable change from 1080 too. Poor 6 year old RX480 isn't having a good time though. #pcupgrade

  34. Well… I went a bit overboard and got caught up in the sales today. My new gaming rig is going to be a wonder to behold! Ryzen 9 7950X with 64 GB DDR5-6000 and an RTX 3090 Ti 24 GB GPU
    Estimated GPU speed improvement: 700%

  35. Here’s an idea, how about an #AMA! “I just upgraded my #gaming PC, #AskMeAnything.” Boost this post and I’ll try to reply to as many questions as I can. Background: I’ve been in IT for 25+ years and a #ComputerGeek even longer. I’ve built several computers over the years and just finished my latest one. See top of this #LongThread for the whole saga. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

  36. After just a few minor tweaks in the BIOS the #Timespy 1.2 score is 14136, with a GPU score of 14599 and CPU score of 11985. This is with a minor GPU #overclock of +150 core and +750 memory. Next step is to watch some videos on DDR4 overclocking and Ryzen tuning and see how high I can get that CPU score. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

  37. For those waiting for the thrilling conclusion of my PC Upgrade saga, here we go. I finally received the final cable, a replacement power cable from the PSU PCIe to the #nvidia 12 pin on the #RTX3070 founders edition. This let me finish cleaning up the rear panel cables (the ones nobody sees). They certainly look better than it started. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

  38. Initial run of #Timespy 1.2 got a respectable 14124. My highest pre-upgrade score was 13121. Adding a thousand points just upgrading the CPU and Memory shows that the upgrade was needed and will easily be worth it. That's it for tonight. #Benchmarking #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

  39. Ostensively one of the biggest upgrades of the system is the move from PCIe gen 3 to gen 4. Unfortunately every part of that bus must support gen 4, including this flat cable on my vertical mount riser. The previous one didn’t, and that caused some issues. This one does! #GoFaster #PCUpgrade #PCHardware

  40. Then I did the most questionable step so far, I installed #Asus #ArmouryCrate control software. This seems to have gone well but the UI itself is very slow. Then I realized that my Corsair RAM didn't show up as a compatible aRGB device. A quick google search and I learned that I would need to install the #iCUE software in addition to Armory Crate.... This is completely my own fault for not checking this before purchasing but... also not going to happen. #PCUpgrade #PCHardware
