The PC-8001mkIISR that I blew up my budget for is working! Kind of. Pushing the reset button makes it act super weird. I'll figure it out. #retrocomputing #pc8001

Forgot to mention that I finally (after way too much money) have a PC-8001mkIISR.
I'm not sure why NEC even made this, as the writing was already on the wall for the 8001 series by this point, but it has a unique screen mode that even the far more advanced 8801 machines can't do.
It needs a lot of work, but I'm looking forward to getting into it. #pc8001 #retrocomputing #pc80mk2 -
New blog post! It's all about the NEC PC-8001, their 1979 #Z80-based miracle of home computing. I got it working, but that was too easy, so I decided to make a whole new floppy drive adapter for it based on some blurry Japanese photos. Did that turn out okay? Eventually... except the _drives_ were broken, too. Come on in and see the rabbit hole I got myself into this time: https://www.leadedsolder.com/2024/07/02/pc8001-pickup-disk-drive-interface.html

No shortage of discrete logic in this NEC PC-8031 disk drive. The rusty full-height 5.25" floppies are going to be "fun" to get working again. #retrocomputing #pc8001 -
Couldn't figure out why the PC-80s31 attached to the homemade floppy disk interface for my PC-8001 was acting up, so I grabbed its older cousin: a PC-8031. Now to start making an adapter. #retrocomputing #pc8001 -
Last night I got sort of annoyed that I can't test my PC-80s31 floppy drive without a copy of NEC Extended BASIC. I'm annoyed because I need to load that BASIC off a cartridge, and I didn't have one! One was made.
If I hooked up the page switching logic right, we should be able to put four copies of Extended BASIC on here. That's very extended indeed.

Well... it probably wasn't the drive's fault after all. Bodged this fix and things are working better but not completely. I suspect the 45-year-old edge connector on the computer stuffed full of dust and mud might be tarnished.

Still trying to figure out why my PC-8001 disk drive interface doesn't work. I've reached the point of blaming the drive itself, but it is rude enough to start working when I test it in isolation. It's gotta be my homemade interface. #retrocomputing #pc8001 #pc80s31 -
Couldn't find the composite cable I made five (six?) years ago, so I whacked together another one. My cable-making skills have only moderately improved and I think it's all due to better tools.
Just look at that sharp monochrome output! You'd never have thought this was a dumpster monitor with the world's noisiest cable and an e-wasted PC-8001. More with this system soon when the re-spin of the floppy drive adapter arrives. #retrocomputing #retrocomputer #pc8001 #crt -
Even though my prototype PC-8033 floppy drive adapter doesn't work, the setup looks pretty cool. #pc8001 #retrocomputing #retrocomputer -
I spent a lot of time crimping IDC cables today to finish building my boards. One adapter for the PC-8001 to use floppy drives, and another for the Sanyo MBC-555 to speak RS-232.
Both these boards are going to be open source: let me know if you have either of these machines and I'll send you a spare board if these end up working out when I test them.

RetroGaming Shorts Part 081 - Chitei No Monster 1983 (NEC PC-8001)
Pixel art inspiration! Undergrand Monster has a distinctive look with blocky 160x100 resolution semi-block graphics and 4x4 pixel sprites.
While I love 8x8 pixel art, honestly 4x4 is a bit too little for expressiveness for me. Nevertheless, I present this example because it's rare and could serve as interesting inspiration.
