  2. New blog post! Hey kids. Have you ever wanted to display the Impressionist masters on your NEC PC-6001 home computer system? Apparently I have. Let's learn some Z80 assembly and, more importantly, how the PC-6001 graphics work. #retrocomputing #pc6001 #z80 #monet #impressionism #artclass

  3. New blog post! Remember when trusted adults promised you that you could be anything? Well, the Raspberry Pi Pico actually _can_ be a ROM cartridge for my beloved NEC PC-6001 home computer. Try not to get jealous of its success.

  4. Wahoo! I finally got a 16k ROM booting off my Pico-based cart for the NEC PC-6001. Is this a multicart yet? No – I want it to do more than just be a multicart, but you can see it from here. #retrocomputing #pc6001 #raspberrypipico

  5. New blog post! When my PC-6001mkII had a spotty keyboard, a Japanese hobbyist came to the rescue with this cool new mechanical PCB. Now I've got clicky-typing for days.

Please share! Especially to those who desire the joy of PC-6001.

  6. Boy I hope I don't do something stupid like get confused about GPIO bitmasks. #retrocomputing #pc6001 #kicad

  7. New blog post! If you buy an NEC PC-6001, you'll have lots of fun. In this case, the "fun" involved a corroded power cord. Come watch me put in a new power supply and a detachable cord plug on my second (of four) PC-6001!

  8. It's really annoying soldering keyboard switches and making sure they stay straight. I was using sticky tack on the top to hold these Kailh Chocs in, but it would sag as the weight shifted. Sticking it on the back to hold the plastic alignment pins tight against the PCB seems to be working way better.

  9. Time to put this NEC PC-6001mkII back on the road. I've had it for years, but the barely functioning keyboard has kept me using the PC-6601SR. I did forget how rough it looks. #retrocomputing #pc6001
  10. Now I have the power of PC-6001 on the go, thanks to this repurposed Sharp Brain electronic dictionary and the iP6 emulator. #retrocomputing #pocketpc #pc6001
  11. The original worked fine, so I didn't really need to spend another 30 bucks for a version-two, but I'm glad I did. This revised PC-6001 PSU mounting board actually has all the holes in the right place, and includes convenient zip tie mounts to keep cable runs clean! #pc6001 #retrocomputing #kicad
  12. A PC-6001 now has a working power supply! Also coincidentally, my #VCFMW stickers came in. #retrocomputing #pc6001
  13. Got the power supply fully wired, tested on the bench, and the PC-6001 reassembled. Caps weren't shorted so I didn't change them. Guess what? They're shorted now!

I don't know why I thought this wouldn't short too. Every single p6 I've had has shorted the tantalum capacitors on the power input to the motherboard.

Kudos to the Meanwell for being smart enough not to power on the remaining rails unlike the stock PSU!

  14. The PC-6001 PSU swap board has quite a few bugs but at least it holds the Meanwell in place. Next stop, harness building. #retrocomputing #kicad #pc6001
  15. New blog post! When I want to play games on my NEC PC-6001, I don't have time to wait around for tapes to load. Let's port homebrew hero Inufuto's 32K arcade-style games to work on a cartridge! https://www.leadedsolder.com/2024/07/23/inufuto-cartridge-port-pc6001.html

  16. My attempt at making a homebrew ROM/32k RAM cart for the NEC PC-6001 seems to have succeeded on the second try. I'm having trouble booting N60 Extended BASIC, but Canyon Climber fires up just fine.

If only I had remembered that the zif lever would get in the way of inserting it into the cartridge slot. Whoops #retrocomputing #pc6001 #kicad #retrocomputer
  17. Took me awhile but I finally figured out how to shoot in Tutankham. (You have to hold left or right AND push space.) #pc6001 #konami #retrogaming #retrocomputing
  18. A little bit of diagnostics showed that the recycled EPROM I was using to load software from was super corroded. Because it made intermittent contact with its socket, the system would only occasionally boot. Some sandpaper and deoxit got things to be more reliable. #retrocomputing #pc6001
  19. Just like me, my first-rev PC-6001 RAM/ROM expander cartridge looks good but doesn't work. I think I've missed shorting the MSW1/MSW2 jumper that keeps the computer from working if it's open and the cartridge is detected. Hopefully an easy bodge and then I can enjoy Extended BASIC. #retrocomputing #pc6001 #kicad
  20. Last night I got sort of annoyed that I can't test my PC-80s31 floppy drive without a copy of NEC Extended BASIC. I'm annoyed because I need to load that BASIC off a cartridge, and I didn't have one! One was made.

If I hooked up the page switching logic right, we should be able to put four copies of Extended BASIC on here. That's very extended indeed.

  21. New blog post! I found a multisync CRT that does a really good job of showing the Northern Lights. Thing is, I eventually got bored of that and decided I would like it to show computer stuff instead. Follow along as I do a not-so-quick recap and then build some adapters for my various e-waste!

  22. I just had to have this joystick, because the box is one of the few Western sources that acknowledged the existence of the NEC PC-6001! #pc6001 #p6 #retrocomputing
  23. Electrolytic capacitors? Never touch the stuff. Fish melt in them #crtrepair #crt #nec #pc6001
  24. New blog post! NEC loved the Apple II so much that they made one of their PC-6001 CRTs cosplay as an Apple II, complete with Motter Tektura logos. Too bad it doesn't work - let's fix it. #retrocomputing #crt #crtrepair #retrocomputers #apple2 #pc6001 https://www.leadedsolder.com/2023/11/14/nec-jb-1260-crt-monitor-repair.html
  25. I've updated the old #NEC #pc6001mkII article on my blog to document the differences between the various modes of NEC BASIC: leadedsolder.com/2019/10/23/pc

It turns out actually reading the manual helps you understand the system! Maybe one day I'll finish fixing the keyboard.

  26. New blog post! This is maybe my favourite post to date. It combines a new kind of repair (thanks CJ!) with a capsule history of NEC corporate structure in the 1980s. Everyone loves a CRT: https://www.leadedsolder.com/2023/06/20/pc-tv-151-crt-repair-pc6001-pc6601.html

  27. It looks like you can stack the NEC PC-6601SR on top of itself. The feet on the bottom of the case are structurally tied to the nubs on the top, which usually hold a monitor, but it can also hold another PC-6601SR.

I wonder if they intended to have other stuff mate with the Mr.PC stack? Maybe a CD-ROM drive?

  28. Having fun trying to figure out why this PC-TV151 monitor, the special one that goes with my PC-6601SR “Mr.PC” and enables all of its cool TV and video overlay features, doesn’t seem to turn on. #retrocomputing #pc6001 #pc6601 #mrpc
