RetroGaming Shorts Part 087 - Dong Hunter 1982 (MZ-80B))
Dong Hunter is a vaguely Donkey Kong style platformer with a twist - every action costs a certain amount of calories. That's an interesting game design idea to ponder.

RetroGaming Shorts Part 083 - Square Garden 1983 (Sharp X1)
Square Garden feels like a hybrid of Asteroids and Robotron, but it also has some similarity to another 1983 Hudson game - Cannon Ball, which was cloned into the better known Pang.
Could be useful for game design inspiration ... maybe do with Square Garden what they did with Pang ...

RetroGaming Shorts Part 081 - Chitei No Monster 1983 (NEC PC-8001)
Pixel art inspiration! Undergrand Monster has a distinctive look with blocky 160x100 resolution semi-block graphics and 4x4 pixel sprites.
While I love 8x8 pixel art, honestly 4x4 is a bit too little for expressiveness for me. Nevertheless, I present this example because it's rare and could serve as interesting inspiration.

RetroGaming Shorts part 010 - Cloud Kingdom
Cloud Kingdom 1983 (Sharp X1)
Remember Joust, the game where you flew using a "flap" button? Well, there were tons of Joust clones but hardly any scrolling or flip-screen Joust action games. _Cloud Kingdom_ is one of those rare ones. Anyone know of others? Like ... any that were actually good? This one looks sluggish, due to the platform's limitations.

RetroGaming Shorts part 005 - Dog Fight
Dog Fight 1982 (Sharp MZ-80B)
Most sideways airplane games like Combat and Sopwith used 16 rotation angles. But this game demonstrates that the gameplay still works even when you reduce it to just FOUR directions.
Think about this for your game designs. For example, a Sprint type racing game, or Asteroids type game, could work with just four facings.
