Musical Interlude: Dame Patricia Routledge left us today. Best known to US audiences as Hyacinth Bucket from the Britcom "Keeping Up Appearances," she played a stuffy character whose ear-splitting voice inspired horrors in others.
In reality, Routledge was a versatile actress, an excellent physical comedian, and had a remarkable contralto voice put to good use in Broadway musicals (she won a Tony in 1968) and in operetta. Here she is, putting her comedy chops and voice to good use.

Very sad news arrived today of the death at the age of 96 of the wonderful Patricia Routledge. I guess she is best known for her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, but to me she will always be Kitty in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV back in the 1980s. She did many other things besides, but here by way of a tribute is an example of Kitty holding forth was was her wont (although usually not in inebriated fashion). Cheadle just won’t be the same without her.

Like most Americans, my first exposure to Patricia Routledge was as Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances. That would have been enough to make me an instant fan but then I saw her in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and then Hildegard of Bingden. I was sold.
