CW: Professional School Adult Shenanigans
A situation at school occurred where six kids gang up on an adult and physically beat on him. Police came. My son was involved. School reacted to behavior. I sensed a deeper issue and this was a symptom. Encouraged group discussion for everyone to be heard.
Finally they got the group together. And I was right. Adults were shocked that kids were feeling ignored and abused. Progress.

Irony alert. Seeing a preview for a movie about an Autistic boy and it’s so freaking loud the Autistic people watching it need to flee.

I’ve been listening to these CHC podcasts. I’m increasingly concerned these are too focused on fixing children. I want to give my son tools to survive the world, but sometimes I’m not sure when it veers into conversion therapy.
What do you think after listening to this?

🧵 1/2 Last week I receive a language report from new school behaviorist. Bad words my son used, all euphemisms. No context. And a schedule of punishments.
Eventually I found part of the issue was his being triggered by the adult when told his PBT score would be reduced. Then he reacts badly and then the punishments add up. His previous behaviorist figured this out and approached it differently.

@johnnyprofane1 Yes I grok this. It’s never about changing who we are. Sometimes it helps to better understand ourselves and how to leverage our innate abilities. #ADHD #AuDHD #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticParenting #ParentingWhileAutistic

Last night my son was up late and I checked in. He asks if I want to see the drawing he did. I had questions. I’m impressed! I did ask if he traced it. Nope. He hand drew it, inverted. My son who school “professionals,” and who know better than parents, said he had small motor issues and that’s why he had trouble writing. Nope! It turns out he loves to write and draw and create. He just couldn’t learn it FROM YOU.

🧵 1/5 School sent an email today about an incident. My son refused to leave a situation where another peer (a friend) was escalated and hitting themselves. My son was reprimanded and will have consequences tomorrow at school.
At first I thought he’d been triggered and became escalated himself. But why punish him for that? Was it “unsafe?”

@hellomiakoda THIS! I can remember that feeling of flight response so many times. Sound triggers me most. I’m glad to be able to tell the other person, “it’s not you, it’s the sound. It’s a normal sound but right now I just can’t. I either need to go or I need you to please stop.”
This is why diagnosis and support are crucial. It doesn’t eliminate the challenges but it sure helps us live better with them.

My son has been into govt, history, military, and old things generally. So at first he expressed an interest in another WW2 army uniform (khaki) this year. But after a bit he sent me a link to a George Washington costume! Interests aligned! Apparently it’s the coat that caught his eye. I’m curious if he’ll wear the wig and hat. 😁

I was reflecting with my husband on the situation where other kids’ behavior was #triggering me and my son on Saturday. He was firm in #advocating for his needs, did so in a socially acceptable manner, didn’t melt down when ignored, and completed his event immediately after in fine form.
He’s struggled and battled a lot of ableism and ignorance in schools, but with great support has built up his skills and #resilience. I’m really proud of him. ❤️

So my son has his first in-person physical since #COVID and his original pediatrician retired. New doc.
She’s going over his record. Mental Health? He has a psychiatrist?
Uh yeah, you guys do that when someone is diagnosed Autistic and ADHD.
She has this look of concern. Also confused as to his atypical responses to her cheery prompts. I just watch with a smirk on my face. So inexperienced, these docs…

@hellomiakoda I know this feeling. For me it happens with I’m highly distracted or having to track too many other people’s getting ready in the morning and such. I love my family but there are times … 🤣🤣

I'm waiting for the youngest to go to bed. But he had a big sleep during the day 😴

The office manager at son’s music school is a spoon thief. The sort that doesn’t realize that every time I have to interact with them a small kitten dies in my dead. A schedule change lead to a reminder email. And a text. And a phone call. And then the LAST thing I wanted to do was go there and be accosted by their actual presence. I’m certain they have no idea. And wouldn’t understand if I told them.

Hmm. Used to be my most productive hours were after work and evening. That shifted until after kid was asleep. But now I’m finding an early bedtime and waking around 2 or 3am may be a better cycle. Rested, energetic, and no people! Yay!

When did it become normal for us to have to seed our calendar with work school, holiday, vacation, med appts, and regular filter items — to avoid over bookings — a year in advance?
We’ve just rolled over fiscal years at work and seems to be the sane pivot for school (summer break).

🧵 1/3 Just got back from seeing #Ezra.
So, it was good. Very emotional roller coaster. I thought my son was bored but he wasn’t antsy to leave. As we were walking out, he shared that he really liked it. It certainly felt authentic.
The story is focused more on a family and inter-generational perspective, which I think will make it more acressivle and relatable to a broader audience.

I mostly recharged this weekend. I opted to work at home today. No meetings afforded me to catch up on a few tasks and chores, too. It was sublime.
Son arrived home covered in clay from the baseball diamond at school. Under protest he stripped to underwear and was sent to shower. Clothes and shoes are being de-clayed.
Now he’s finishing schoolwork not completed this PM. He did pick up on the “it’s not time to talk back” vibe. So yay.

Yes “Treering,” I’m sure you think it’s important to remind us to order yearbooks for a school my son hasn’t been at for two years. But I literally loathe the principal, who kept ignoring my son’s #IEP, so much I’ll just block you, laugh, and vent some.

I’m very glad this alternate placement has worked for my son, and is serving to help him prepare to transition back to regular school site. But to say I’m eager for the transition to occur is an understatement. I will be very glad to be back in a position where I can be more productive again and try and focus on more self-care.
It’s easy to forget the changes we make to help our kids sometimes hurt us.

Waiting while my son has his piano lesson. Enjoying some jazz piano. But the child trying to sing needs a little less jazz in their vocals. My ears actually hurt. And that’s from behind a closed door. Yikes. Do these teachers get hazard pay?

It’s things like this that remind me when someone is super intent that I know they’re a “certified professional” and feeding me opinions as fact.

We hit a coin show in Sunnyvale today and made a few finds. Better yet, we met some great people and got a few pointers to collector groups that my son will check out and maybe find some great community!

My son has developed a strong interest in coin collecting. Today marked an interesting twist. He’d rolled up a batch of pennies and declared he wanted to go to the bank to exchange them.
Orly? Well the teller didn’t bat an eye. In exchange he got a $2 bill, some rolls of nickels, and rolls of … pennies?!
Yep! He wants a new batch! Teller again didn’t bat an eye. Is this not as unusual as it felt to me?

@lkanies @hmm_cook It may be worth clarifying what we’re motivating our #neurodifferent kids FOR?
We maintain #routines for daily living needs… getting ready school, homework, bath and bed time.
For #interests, it’s best to let them self-pilot. We can introduce them to new things and see what sticks. But are #allistic kids so malleable that it works differently for them? If anything, we worked to maintain multiple interests.
