Hands-on web security, 2026-04-09, 12:00
A "Capture the Flag" (#CTF) is an ethical game for learning and practising #computersecurity skills in a legal environment. We will play #OverTheWire Natas, which teaches web application security. To solve each level, you need to find vulnerabilities by inspecting the website's source code, HTTP headers, or cookies, finding hidden directories, injecting SQL code, and more.
Open for all, no registration needed.

Hello, again :ablobcatnodfast:
On weekends, I focus on practicing what I learned during the week. Today, I worked on level 26 of Bandit from OverTheWire.org. It was a doozy level. I didn't know that changing the terminal size could affect the more utility, but I finally found a way to access vim from more. Then, I was able to get a shell.

👋 When I first started my career in cyber security many years back, #OverTheWire Bandit Wargame was one of the first #CTF that I played. I enjoyed it very much and wrote a blog series about it!! 😄
Back then, there were only 26 stages and some of the solutions doesn't work anymore in 2023 (changes were made to the stages). 😅
👉 Recently, I went back to work on all the 32 stages available and created a series of detailed step-by-step walkthrough video with explanations!
It should be very useful for people who are new to #cybersecurity and want to learn more about things like #Linux, system security or just enjoy solving challenges in general! 💪

Revisited my #OverTheWire solutions because they apparently adjusted the flags and machines and figured out two things in the process:
- When using #pwnlib, it's very tempting to use their gdb helpers to programmatically interact with gdb and extract program state from it. This turns out not to be intended, it's merely assistance so that you can have gdb running alongside with your exploit for easy debugging of a process. I ended up launching a regular process querying gdb for information about register/memory state.
- The #Emacs markdown-mode has a useful `TAB` command that either cycles visibility of headlines or toggles between indenting the current line (which can be used to quickly indent/unindent code) -
Tinkering today with a server where you write TSX / JSX and get a single endpoint that can serve just the plain HTML in different ways. For example you can do .htmlwc or .js and get the web component in either HTML format or JS format. Lots of interesting ideas here. #deno #htmx #html #server #webdev #overthewire #webcomponent #webcomponents
