I did see a lot of passionate stakeholders connecting with each other, and that gave me hope. Somebody should make a Discord server or hashtag where the like-minded can gather, strategize, and work for change. #endotwracism

As elections for the #OTW board approach, I have thought some on what I have been hearing in chatter on the interwebs. More specifically wrt to #endotwracism.

The lack of censorship on ao3 beyond "does this or does this not violate the laws where we host" is rooted in very good historical reasons, which I believe are still good reason in this day and age.

The usual corporate solutions are horrible. Pay peanuts for moderators in the third world to exclusively review horrific content, and give no mental health care at all. Even with venture capital funding (which ao3 does not have) this doesn't work particularly well.

The OTW is run by volunteers. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would wish to volunteer exclusively to review such horrific content.

Moreover how are guidelines on racism meant to be explained in a way that moderators across a vast array of cultural backgrounds can consistently make decisions?

This is without wondering about white people being offended by any depiction of racism in it that forces them to confront the fact that racism is racist.

To me, it seems that a lot of criticism of #otw can be categorised as either concern trolling, or, an attempted power grab using "think of the black people" instead of think of the children.

I am donating to the #otw this year.
