  1. Just along from where Te Rauparaha was buried in Ōtaki in 1849 is Pukekaraka where Ngāti Kapu entrusted land for a Catholic Mission to be established there in 1851. We visited there today and was surprised to see a Stations of the Cross - a series of 14 images or representations depicting Christ's journey to Calvary and his crucifixion. In our experiences these are very rare in Aotearoa, while in Hungary they are everywhere. At the top of hill is a cemetery with several ancient Maori graves. It is now used specifically for deceased priests and sisters as decreed by the ancestors of Ngāti Kapu. It felt like a very special place and I don't think you need to Catholic, Christian, religious or even especially spiritual to appreciate its importance and uniqueness.

That was an M3.5 #eqnz just 7 km from #Otaki, though 35 km deep. Would probably have noticed it if I wasn’t asleep at 2:20 am.

Weak earthquake occurred 15 km north-east of Paraparaumu: geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2023p

  26. Every year there is a wonderful weekend #Kite Festival in #Otaki Beach, #NZ. Lovely weather for it, but could do with a bit more wind, as evidenced by this Eagle trying to take off. 😀

  31. #Satellite loop of Tropical #CycloneGabrielle (with eye) over the last three hours, spinning as it heads SE to cross Norfolk Island then carry on to #NZ.

The outflow cirrus already covers most of the North Island … we can see it to the north now from #Ōtaki. #weather

  39. At a fund-raising evening in Ōtaki, benefitting the Friends of the Ōtaki Rotunda. Delighted to meet Gaylene Preston, who is guest speaker, and get an autographed copy of her book. Besides talks, we will also be watching a screening of “Ruby and Rata”.
