Just along from where Te Rauparaha was buried in Ōtaki in 1849 is Pukekaraka where Ngāti Kapu entrusted land for a Catholic Mission to be established there in 1851. We visited there today and was surprised to see a Stations of the Cross - a series of 14 images or representations depicting Christ's journey to Calvary and his crucifixion. In our experiences these are very rare in Aotearoa, while in Hungary they are everywhere. At the top of hill is a cemetery with several ancient Maori graves. It is now used specifically for deceased priests and sisters as decreed by the ancestors of Ngāti Kapu. It felt like a very special place and I don't think you need to Catholic, Christian, religious or even especially spiritual to appreciate its importance and uniqueness.

The Stations of the Cross are a simple and meaningful prayer that helps us remember Jesus’ journey to the cross. Through fourteen moments, we reflect on His suffering and love. ✝️
Often prayed during Lent, this devotion can be done alone or with others, indoors or outdoors. Walking from station to station reminds us that Jesus walks with us and teaches us how to carry our crosses with faith. 🌿🕯️

A number of years ago we ran a #GoodFriday families workshop where we made #StationsoftheCross.
This is 'Jesus Dies.' I love the art of #LucioFontana and this station, representing the the torn Temple curtain, really mirrors his work.
