How to Find Photography Competitions, Open Calls, Grants and Travel Opportunities
Every week, somewhere in the world, a grant opens. A residency starts taking applications. A travel company goes looking for a photographer to document a trip. A magazine puts out an open call for submissions.
Photography opportunities are everywhere. The problem is finding them before the deadline passes.
If you’ve ever discovered a grant the day after it closed, this post is for you. Let’s look at where photography opportunities actually live, why they’re so easy to miss, and how to stop letting the good ones slip by.
Photography opportunities are out there (but they’re scattered)
Here’s the frustrating truth. The best photography opportunities are rarely in one place. A single grant might be announced on an arts foundation’s website. A residency lives on a museum’s page. A photo contest hides in a newsletter you don’t subscribe to. A paid travel gig gets posted once, on one platform, and then it’s gone.
To find them all, you’d have to check dozens of sites every week. Foundations. Museums. Magazines. Competition pages. Brand career pages. Social media. Nobody has time for that. So most photographers check a few sources, miss the rest, and assume there just aren’t many opportunities out there. There are. You’re just not seeing them.
What counts as a photography opportunity?
When people think about opportunities for photographers, they usually picture competitions. But the field is much wider than that. Here’s what’s actually available if you know where to look.
Open calls. Museums, galleries, and publications regularly put out open calls for submissions. Some lead to exhibitions. Some lead to being published. Many are free to enter.
Photography grants. Foundations and organisations offer grants to fund projects, sometimes worth thousands. These can pay for your next body of work, your gear, or your travel.
Artist residencies. Residencies give you time, space, and often funding to make work somewhere new. Some are aimed specifically at early-career photographers.
Photography competitions. Contests can offer prize money, exhibition space, gear, and exposure. The good ones are worth entering.
Paid travel and content work. Travel companies, hotels, and brands look for photographers, videographers, and content creators to document their trips and tell their stories. These roles are real, and they pay.
That’s a lot of ground. And it’s exactly why keeping track is so hard.
Why finding opportunities takes so long
Searching for photography opportunities on your own is a part-time job. You have to know which sites to check. You have to check them often, because deadlines move fast. You have to sort the worthwhile ones from the scams and the overpriced entry fees.
Most photographers give up on this quickly because the searching eats the time they’d rather spend actually shooting. So the opportunities keep appearing, and keep closing, and the work that could have come from them never happens.
