Results from our Third-Party Partner project #AKASE are in!
What if a search engine could assess the quality of arguments?
The AKASE project team built an Argumentation Knowledge Graph based on 105 million web documents that were pulled from the #OpenWebIndex. The Knowledge Graph maps how arguments across the web support, attack, and rephrase each other.
The system identifies claims and premises, detects logical fallacies, and assesses argument quality automatically.

Lots of ideas being thrown around today for the future of the #openwebindex .
With the end of EU funding for this critical infrastructure we're meeting up to discuss how to carry on. -
🧮 Time for a Sunday numbers game
Did you know that the #OpenWebIndex pilot is currently based on over 1 Petabyte of raw data?
👉 This amount equals roughly over 1 billion books (assuming an average book contains about 300 pages and 100.000 words).
👉 In terms of songs, 1 Petabyte amounts to approximately 250 million MP3s (calculating with 4 MB per song file).
You can find more OWI stats directly via the OWI Dashboard: https://openwebindex.eu/

TechSpot: Europe prepares trial for Open Web Index to reduce reliance on Google and Bing. “As Google users complain about the worsening quality of search results and GenAI integration, European organizations are working to plant the seeds of alternative solutions. One such initiative aims to build a public index to support new search engines and reduce Europe’s reliance on Google and Bing.”

In May we kicked off the PriDI (Privacy-enhancing digital infrastructures) project.Over the next three years, our teams from the University of Kassel and the OSF will investigate how Internet search can be organised in a way that respects fundamental rights and protects privacy.
Bringing together legal and business informatics expertise, the we will examine the manifold implications surrounding a European #OpenWebIndex:

👉 Value-by-Design.
Advancing Ethical Web Search! In June, a part of our team joined the @osf ethics working group for an #EthicsInSearch workshop in Bochum, Germany.
This collaboration enriches our research into ethical guidelines for web search helping us develop guidelines for the #OpenWebIndex. The session focused on applying key values to web search, preparing ethical assessments, and crafting risk scenarios with mitigation strategies.

Congrats to @osf & Uni Kassel on their new project PriDI – Privacy-enhancing Digital Infrastructure which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The project is researching how an #OpenWebIndex can be designed in conformity with fundamental rights and in such a way that it protects #privacy.
The legal implications of a European #OpenWebIndex are a key area of our research as well. We hence look forward to insightful project developments:
