  1. the harder we try to spread Linux, the more we accidentally reinvent structures that the church figured out thousands of years ago

  2. Nineteen minutes. I need a self-maintaining system, at least in July. I want all goodies and the latest Cosmic. Don't want to be bothered with updates. Dusted off my Cosmix-Saigon, based on the great Nixbook project by @codemonkeymike . From iso to login, everything and the kitchensink installed and running: 19 minutes. Amazing!

At this point, my main reason for recommending #Fedora over #Debian is that both grub and the LUKS prompt are graphical, rather in teensy text mode. Also, Fedora lets you re-attempt the LUKS password more times before pooping you into an inscrutable (for newbies) grub recovery mode.

That may sound incredibly trivial to an old neckbeard like myself, but it's a huge difference for newbies.

I'm also now investigating #NixBook OS for newbie recommendations. I'm not in love with Nix as a distro, but massive props to @codemonkeymike for all of his efforts, in both creating that OS spin, and in serving his community by providing free laptops rescued from e-waste. That's honestly heroic shiz, may-un. ;)

  4. @jrg If it works for you, this sounds good. [1] is an amazing project that does basically that: an auto-updating base and for the apps. Nothing wrong with that. You can use nix-flatpak [2] to put your flatpaks into configuration.nix, but then you might as well just use the native apps from nixpkgs, which probably work better in general. nix-env is pretty evil and I'd say avoid it.

  5. and side-by-side! I made a project similar to nixbook but geared towards low-storage chromebooks, feel free to check it out! git.ownfusion.com/ownfusion/vo

  6. I've got 3 more laptops I'm giving away this upcoming week, rocking nixbookos!

2 of these laptops have 4GB of RAM, and they feel great! Good work @codemonkeymike, nixbook never fails to amaze me.

  7. I've been messing about with #nixbook on MacBook Air (2014). I've tried, with great success so far, Toshy for remapping keyboard to match macOS shortcuts and keyboard commands. This weekend I'm gonna see if I can get it to work on #nixos. Somehow I doubt I'll have much luck.

Anyway, here's how to install Toshy elsewhere.
