  1. Busy event week!
    👉 #SC23 in Denver with #OpenWebSearchEU partners @LRZ_DE + IT4Innovations
👉 major panel on #OpenWebSearch + #LLMs at #NGIForum23 in Brussels , moderated by @osf's board member @frauplote and with OpenWebSearch.eu's principal investigator @grani of Universität Passau in the panel of experts. @alnuss explained the basic ows.eu ethics methodology at a workshop on #EthicsinSearch. Plus lots of good talks + interesting meetings with members of fellow @EC_NGI projects!

  2. Last week, Europe called the #OpenWebSearchCommunity
@frauplote founding + board member of the @osf moderated a panel on #OpenWebSearch + #LLMs at the #NGIForum23 in Brussels.
The gathering brought together @EC_NGI's project teams, high-level #EU policy people, researchers and innovators in an inspiring event.
Also in the panel of experts: @grani of University Passau, principal investigator of @openwebsearcheu and OSF member

  3. @rriemann @gvlx

Had a look thought the #Particify site, and it seems to be only a ONE-WAY tool, with controlled/shaped feedback. Which is why whoever organized #NGIForum23 used it. This is not "people to people" and it's not "trust". How can we go about putting in an official complaint to #NGI and their sponsors about this mess they keep pushing #EU

  4. I had 2 wild “small world” moments at #NGIForum23.

    1. Running into Xavier Damman, a SF coworking space buddy from 2010.

    2. Seeing my tiny alma mater Emerson College as a featured @peertube user. howlround.com/

  5. Q. #ngiForum23

Are people talking about defunding the blockchain crew, and investigate the HUGE pouring down the drain of public funding that has been happening for the last ten years on this mess.

  6. Q. For #NGIForum23

How do we have meaningful communication between our #geekproblem and our humanists with the noise of our #fashernistas

    * firstly the geeks are very reluctant to talk outside there "common sense"

    * and they are partly right, as we have a bad signal-to-noise issue.

How can we make this work?

  7. I was notified via email shortly before the Activitypub workshop was due to start that "due to the nature of the workshop" there wouldn't be a live stream. I'd set aside time to attend (remotely) so a bit disappointed! Esp as I promoted it too! Why weren't we able to just watch? Listen to what was being covered? Looked in on the copyright and ethics workshops. We need better/different ways of representing these ideas, the futures they promise.

  8. Q. For #NGIForum23

How do we move away from this mess the #dotcons have pushed our world into? Looking at the Fediverse as example, recommendations please.

  9. I think Fediverse software without open APIs are a bad thing. #ngiforum23

  10. @EC_NGI you also advertised for community.ngi.eu/ and encouraged all grantees to join.
Beyond the fact that this platform is proprietary and transfers data outside of the EU (fundingbox.com/trust/transfer-), it does not even work. When registering, the confirmation email does not work.
    #NGIForum23

  11. @EC_NGI you have someone on stage advertising for a “training programme” on communication that is said to run twice a year for three months, but the next date announced is “11th January 2023”: ngi.eu/ngi-communication-train
You are encouraging grantees to register, but registrations are closed: ti.to/ngi/communication-strate
    🙃 #NGIForum23

  12. Pearse O'Donohue, Director for the Future Networks Directorate of DG CONNECT at the European Commission, announced a new €27M commons fund and new pilots for strategic topics: central bank digital currencies, scaling fediverse service providers, development in local communities.

I am very curious to know more the new fediverse pilot. Can't find any more information yet. @EC_NGI can you link me something?

  13. “Apathy is not an option.” —Jennifer Baker aka brusselsgeek closing out the main stage sessions

    #NGIForum23

  14. Closing thoughts:

@koen: The appeal of the fediverse is individuals being in control of their online presence, like websites originally were.

@renchap: The fediverse is strong because of the interoperable standard (ActivityPub, Activity Streams).

tobi: technology and open standards are not enough to create civil online engagement, but individuals are in more in control of their experience.

    #NGIForum23

  15. @renchap envisioned Mastodon.social having a Wikipedia-like model offering free use and voluntary contribution from users. No need for a Meta-like "pay or give us your data" model.

@koen suggested governments operating Mastodon community servers purchase support contacts from Mastodon gGmbH (non-profit) to fund its development.

    #NGIForum23

  16. #NGIForum23 Our social system based on greed and selfishness - #neoliberalism is obviously incompatible with #FOSS #openweb and basic human survival in the era of #climatechaos and #XR

If you think outside "common sense", it's obviously incompatible with "European values" we talk about and base our #FOSS tech on.

How do we build on these "native" non-commercial codebases and ethos. Let's not keep pushing the same #dotcons paths or #geekproblem paths of "sustainability".

  17. @koen suggested hosting providers of fediverse software voluntarily fund the projects they are profiting from.

tobi challenged that open source software developers do not need to imitate the power structures and desire of big tech companies focused on scaling and constantly acquiring users.

Koen responded scaling is a necessary concern to attract non-developer users who can't manage their own servers.

@renchap agreed scaling is about being accessible to everyone.

  18. Tbh this session on the Fediverse isn't that great. They're mostly lost in small discussions around technical and payment issues and only Koene de Jonge seems to really get what we need to talk about, which is why we need to have democratic civic owned social communications, not walled gardens. Geek guys are cool, but they won't invent a better future.

  19. More than 9,000 monthly donors are funding the Mastodon project. Many are also donating to their own instances. However, most people on core team still are volunteers or not paid to work full time on it. There is a need for more funding. — @renchap

  20. Up next: panel on decentralized social media featuring

    @renchap, CTO of Mastodon

    tobi smethurst, creator of @gotosocial

@koen, Open Internet Discourse Foundation which operates the infrastructure for several major Dutch Mastodon servers

Moderated by Jennifer Baker aka brusselsgeek

  21. @hamishcampbell hard to tell, think it's a "opencoreish" #NGO CMS they likely funded from Germany. So maybe ticks the #FOSS box in technical sense... who knows, one thing we can say it is a #4opens fail and this is getting worse not better. The people responsible for this need, employs, to be disciplined or sacked is likely the only way of STOPPING this mess making, trust fail #NGIForum23

  22. #NGIForum23 The is no way to edit or remove questions. The is no way to talk to anyone... A normal #NGI "trust" #4opens fail, except this time it is a hardcoded due to the use of this CMS for the event. Before this we used #FOSS with #BBB which worked well, then #dotcons silos that worked after a fight each time to get chat turned on, now we are here #blocking, every #EU tech event has pushed this "control" mess over the public. What are you guys in "control" going to do to stop this.

  23. Anthony Harrison: Commercial companies should be forced to publish SBOMs publicly to show how much open source software they are using. They should be funding the open source developers they profit from. More countries should be following Deutschland’s lead with its Sovereign Tech Fund.

    #NGIForum23

  24. @melanierieback: We are putting too much onus on small developers. Pen testing is not cheap. Many devs do not lack desire, but ability to afford it. @NGIZero is helping fund this work, but projects need to think about business models. Not VC or freemium. Calls on EC to help devs build independent businesses with steward ownership.

Philippe Ombredanne: We don't tax air. We shouldn't tax security. VC-backed security companies are a tax on security. Need for more open source tooling.

    #NGIForum23

  25. Big challenges right now for SBOMs:

    • 3 competing standards: scribesecurity.com/sbom/standa

    • inaccurate or incomplete license specification in libraries

    • tooling split between open source and commercial, with commercial bias

    • no clear "just do it this way" guidance

    • gets generated "and then what?" problem
