  1. Our Forge & Craft “mini-masterpiece”1 for the Wimbledon Art Fair for spring 2025, is titled Heliocode.

Throughout the past year, we’ve been experimenting with the use of paint as an element of our pen plotter work. This is not to the same extent as some of our friends in the community, who have built complete systems to pick and apply colours individually2 – instead, we’re using 3D printed styli to draw through poured paints. We’ve found this to be an interesting combination, juxtaposing the organic and unpredictable movement of the paints with the precision of the drawn lines.

Our previous mini-masterpiece, New Horizons, was in the show sale last November; a behind-the-scenes image crept into my previous post about plotter work.

The new piece, Heliocode, is something that Heidi spent a lot of time on, largely while I was travelling in my new role! The line art design was my principal contribution – that may reappear in different form, in a future project; experimentation with paint, and creation of the final artwork, were all thanks to her efforts. The design was was not intended to be reminiscent of the previous work, at all (in fact, it was never created with the intent to be plotted) – although, viewed one after the other, I can see that there’s a coincidental similarity.

    Heliocode

The artwork was created with a Bantam Tools NextDraw 1117, and again combines poured paint techniques with the more strict stylus dynamics of a coded SVG design. We chose a vibrant yellow medium, and a dark violet for the line art. A slight imperfection still found its way into the pattern, which is part of the charm of working with a mixture of digital and analog tools.

Feel free to take a look at the new work, on the Wimbledon Art Fair sale site – it is one of a kind, at an affordable price.

You can also come to visit us at the event itself – find us in Red Studios 273, between May 8th – May 11th 2025.

  6. Putting down the last of 8 ink layers on this album cover commission study. Might just be the final I like it so much.

  7. Sneaking in some Sunday plotting. The lime and hunter green Pilot G2's create a great moss like texture when combined. Or maybe I'm just ready for Spring to get here.

Monoprint from last night made with 7 different Pilot G2 pens and some white acrylic paint. Think I'm going to cut 2 pens out to make it a little less muddy.

  9. The last week of the month is always production mode. My #NextDraw runs pretty much non-stop for days. These 'swatches' aren't the most dynamic prints but they were relaxing to set up and enjoyed the various patterns that developed with different colors and line widths.

  10. Some test prints from last month plotted with a glass dip pen and inks.

  11. Happy New Year!
    January '25 Subscriber Set

I recently bought a glass dip pen and this month's prints use line work that extends out to the limits that one dip of ink will get you. A set of red, green, and blue inks was used along with a white Signo gel pens.

  12. December subscriber set.

The top layer of white ink and overall build up of the ink give these prints a great texture. Really like the results but I went through at least 7 of the white pens

  13. November subscriber prints.

Watercolor paint and gel pens on 5"x7" BFK Rives paper

The paint in these prints was applied with a round 1/2" diameter foam brush. The two colors overlap a tiny bit allowing the paints to interact directly on the print.

Signo 0.5mm gel pens and watercolor on BFK Rives.

I've been plotting on bristol almost exclusively because it's so smooth and takes pen line work so well but as I use more mixed media I'm finding other papers work better overall. This BFK Rives is great at taking the watercolor with no bleeding or curling.

Fluid acrylic paint and Signo UM-153 pens on 5"x7" bristol

Was a busy month and got a late start on this print set. Not going at my usual pace, with it's usual time for trial and error left me feeling rushed which may have impacted my thoughts on these prints. As with all work, parts I like and parts I don't but need to look at with fresh eyes.

  17. Raise your skinny embroidery pattern, on a Bantam Tools #NextDraw

Normally erasable pens are a no-no on pen plotters because they are certainly not archival… but for embroidery patterns after embroidering, a quick touch of a heat press iron the pattern lines will magically disappear.

  18. August '24 Subscriber Prints

Still working with the paint and Signo pen combination as I continue to be excited by the rich tones you can build up. Worked this month a lot with the gold pen in addition to the standard red, blue, and black and love how it comes through. Never thought I'd be a gold pen guy but here we are.

  19. Still working with these line moire patterns. I used to put an emphasis on changing techniques and materials often in the spirit of exploration but I'm finding success in limiting the exploration to a specific set of tools.

Still working with these #moire pen line prints. Amazed at the amount of tones you can generate with just a few pens. I did bring in gold and white ink on these in addition to the red, blue, and black. The paint is actually a screen printing ink made from captured carbon. It's super pricey but love the idea and it has a nice matte finish.

Took a picture of this one before and after adding the black ink because I can't decide if I like it better with or without. Leaning towards with. Any preference?

  22. #plotparty 24.0610 - Moire

I often like to start a print with a base mark of white acrylic somewhere on the paper. It provides a subtle shift in the way the ink goes down and provides a bit of unpredictability to the plot.

  23. Figuring out some of the more experimental aspects of plotting on tracing paper, this is a 4 layer attempt. I love how ghostly it looks!

  24. Working on stair tiles, this will probably be a good segue into the 4 layers I'd like to make up the output to vellum, giving a really cool sense of depth.

  30. I may have missed the April 5 challenge deadline, but I'll still post my Bantam Tools "Squiggle University" challenge. It's a squiggle-ized version of the output of some Truchet Tiling code I wrote a while ago. Would be cool to plot it using a #nextdraw.

  31. Thanks to everyone who made it out to our first Bantam Tools #plotterstudysession it was a pleasure meeting all of you! We look forward to making this a monthly meetup so stay tuned for details on the next one! #NextDraw #ArtFrame
