There's this little bird (a pheobe, I think?) that is always on bug patrol near my tiny cabin. Today I found some gel pens, so decided to try them out. The limited color pallet was a real challenge for me.

The finale: Ang's quest for her favorite pen.

The three i narrowed it down to were:
- Zebra Sarasa Clip
- Pentel Energel
- Sakura Gelly Roll

Not to spoil, but the Sarasa stole my heart. It has consistent, smooth writing that is not slippery. It does smear, but in the category of smooth gel pens its not going to receive the level of scrutiny that the S-Gel recieved. If this bothers me, i will try the Sarasa Dry!

Stationery Review: the Sharpie S-Gel i found on the bus!

The Sharpie S-Gel is remarkably popular for non-enthusiasts. I doubt sharpie makes anything besides the body of this pen. I attribute its success to the Sharpie name: the marker was seen as reliable, confident, and bold. This is something most gel pens boast, and having one with both the Sharpie name *and* really thick lines at a good price is what really sold it.

This particular pen has rusted, smells really bad, and definitely got on the bus by way of another crow-person, as it had definitely spent much time outside.

It writes with really dark, thick lines, as expected, but has a bit too much stick for my liking. It also has pretty bad flow control, which leads to bad smearing. I definitely don't reccomend this to left handed writers.

You're probably better off buying a fine tip sharpie marker. It does the same thing but better.

People are really scalping the hell out of the Uniball Zento Signature. It's a $27 pen, but I've seen it priced in the hundreds because it's been almost constantly sold out everywhere since just after it launched.

It's wild how this one particular pen seems to be what everyone is going after right now.

I've noticed something lately, I'm seeing gel pens that have "liquid gel ink" written on them. And now I'm wondering is this different form regular gel ink? Can't seem to find anywhere that refers to them as anything separate or different from regular gel ink. And I myself haven't really come across the specific wording, “liquid gel ink" until very recently.

Anyone know if there's any difference? Or if the brands that are saying "liquid gel ink" are just doing it as a marketing thing to try and stand out from the crowd?

November subscriber prints.

Watercolor paint and gel pens on 5"x7" BFK Rives paper

The paint in these prints was applied with a round 1/2" diameter foam brush. The two colors overlap a tiny bit allowing the paints to interact directly on the print.

For what it’s worth I stopped at Meininger’s Art Supply and tried a few options. They had a few more Gelly Rolls to try than Ladyfingers Ladypress did. The Gelly Roll 10 is slightly better than the Uniball Signo, but it’s still not the dazzling white I’m looking for.

Oh well, I picked up more Uniball Signo Broad pens in silver, which are still fantastic.

Signo 0.5mm gel pens and watercolor on BFK Rives.

I've been plotting on bristol almost exclusively because it's so smooth and takes pen line work so well but as I use more mixed media I'm finding other papers work better overall. This BFK Rives is great at taking the watercolor with no bleeding or curling.

Fluid acrylic paint and Signo UM-153 pens on 5"x7" bristol

Was a busy month and got a late start on this print set. Not going at my usual pace, with it's usual time for trial and error left me feeling rushed which may have impacted my thoughts on these prints. As with all work, parts I like and parts I don't but need to look at with fresh eyes.

August '24 Subscriber Prints

Still working with the paint and Signo pen combination as I continue to be excited by the rich tones you can build up. Worked this month a lot with the gold pen in addition to the standard red, blue, and black and love how it comes through. Never thought I'd be a gold pen guy but here we are.

Still working with these line moire patterns. I used to put an emphasis on changing techniques and materials often in the spirit of exploration but I'm finding success in limiting the exploration to a specific set of tools.

Still working with these #moire pen line prints. Amazed at the amount of tones you can generate with just a few pens. I did bring in gold and white ink on these in addition to the red, blue, and black. The paint is actually a screen printing ink made from captured carbon. It's super pricey but love the idea and it has a nice matte finish.

I often like to start a print with a base mark of white acrylic somewhere on the paper. It provides a subtle shift in the way the ink goes down and provides a bit of unpredictability to the plot.
