There's this little bird (a pheobe, I think?) that is always on bug patrol near my tiny cabin. Today I found some gel pens, so decided to try them out. The limited color pallet was a real challenge for me.

Sarasa pens continue to disappoint me. These are the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sarasa Clip pens I've bought, and of the four in total, the first one didn't write at all, and of the three in this photo, only the orange one writes any degree of well.

The other two write, but they feel like the ball is gritty; dirty. Writing with them feels like I'm trying to write on sand paper. If they were fountain pens I'd be looking to see if the tines were poorly aligned or maybe even considering giving them a little gentle rubbing on fine grit sandpaper. They're that bad.

But even the orange one that writes best of them all is still gritty enough it probably wouldn't feel good for more than a short sprint of jotting something down.

It sucks because I love the colors. I actually got the blue and white so I could use them on dark colored papers. But neither of them write well. I've even just scribbled away for a page or two trying to get whatever feels like it's on their balls off of them but they still write like they're stuffed full of grit.

I don't get it when I hear people say these are so good, and how much they love them. Is there a trick? Something you have to do to get them to write well? Usually Japanese stationary is top notch and I've heard so many really good things about these, but my experience has just been bad every time.

Fun fact, if you like the feel of Uni gel pens, but want something with thinner lines, the Jetstream refills will work in most Uniball ONE and Zento pen bodies. The only exception I've seen so far is they are a little too short to work in the Zento Signature. But this could probably be fixed by using something to extend the Jetstream refill a couple millimeters.

Stationery Review: the Sharpie S-Gel i found on the bus!

The Sharpie S-Gel is remarkably popular for non-enthusiasts. I doubt sharpie makes anything besides the body of this pen. I attribute its success to the Sharpie name: the marker was seen as reliable, confident, and bold. This is something most gel pens boast, and having one with both the Sharpie name *and* really thick lines at a good price is what really sold it.

This particular pen has rusted, smells really bad, and definitely got on the bus by way of another crow-person, as it had definitely spent much time outside.

It writes with really dark, thick lines, as expected, but has a bit too much stick for my liking. It also has pretty bad flow control, which leads to bad smearing. I definitely don't reccomend this to left handed writers.

You're probably better off buying a fine tip sharpie marker. It does the same thing but better.

People are really scalping the hell out of the Uniball Zento Signature. It's a $27 pen, but I've seen it priced in the hundreds because it's been almost constantly sold out everywhere since just after it launched.

It's wild how this one particular pen seems to be what everyone is going after right now.

The Pentel Energel, Sharpie S-Gel, and Pilot G2, can all use each other's ink refills. The Pilot Precision V5 can use Pentel Energel and Pilot G2 refills, but not the S-Gel refills, and Pilot Frixion refills can be used in Pilot G2 or Precision V5 pens. But don't fit in any of the others.

And yes, I tested this just out of curiosity. I've actually found that a lot of pens can use other pens refills.

Can't seem to find anywhere that refers to them as anything separate or different from regular gel ink. And I myself haven't really come across the specific wording, “liquid gel ink" until very recently.
