Not forever. Just long enough for everyone to stop being so exhausted by them.

Ten years of silence would probably do more for them than another interview, documentary, court case, podcast, product launch, grievance, rebrand, or carefully timed appearance.

The old royal rule associated with the late Queen Elizabeth II was very simple:

Never complain.

Never explain.

They have done almost nothing but complain and explain.

They are not winning the social media game.

They are not winning the Royal Family game.

They are not even winning the “leave us alone” game, because they keep appearing.

So retire.

Go home.

Raise the children.

Stop reacting.

Stop watching the Palace calendar.

Let the Royal Family continue without them in peace.

Let the public forget the worst of it.

Let Harry discover who he is when he is not the wounded prince.

Let Meghan discover who she is when there is no opposition to manage.

Then perhaps, in ten years, they could reappear as older, quieter, wiser people with nothing left to prove.

But retirement only works if you stop peering through the curtains to see whether everyone still misses you.
