I think I'll wait for the street sweeper to collect the rest of the winter gravel before riding the R50 again. This nail cut a 1+ inch (3cm) hole in my tube. And it did so while I was doing 50mph (80kph). It was an extremely odd to have my rear tire step out to the side when I wasn't leaned over in a gravely corner. I got to the shoulder safely, crab walk and all.
I had to call @amanda because I didn't have patches in my kit. But that also meant she could bring better tire irons, better pump, water, a snack, and an extra hand. So really worth it all around.
We got the tire half off and back on twice, because my patch of the slice missed the additional pin-pricks where the nail exited the other side of the tire. But eventually we got things sorted and I rode safely home.
