  1. I've been doing some further testing (playing games if I'm honest) on the Pico MZ-700 emulator this afternoon. Most things seem ok, but I found a couple of minor issues to sort out. February's job if the weather stays so bad!

  3. The #MZ700 emulation for the #Pico MZ is nearly finished! Documentation to write and update, plus testing on #RC2014 cards and #Pico2 hardware left to do. Hoping to have version 3.0.0 released by the end of the month. #RetroComputing

  5. My rewrite of the 8255 emulation seems to have fixed the keyboard handling weirdness and cursor blink speed issues on the #MZ700 emulation. It also seems to have sorted the odd glitch I knew I still had with #MZ80K keyboard handling. The new emulation is more efficient, so I may be able to drop the Pico clock speed another 10MHz or so ...

  9. Running the emulator at 200MHz is a definite improvement - it's only 2 seconds slower than the real thing for the primes up to 10,000.

  11. Sunday afternoon benchmarking session. A real MZ-700 vs my emulator. The emulator is currently 20% or so too fast when running on a 220MHz Pi Pico. Should be easy enough to slow down!!

  13. Using my trusty Sieve of Erastothenes program plus some trial and error, it looks as if overclocking a Pico to somewhere around 210 - 220MHz will work nicely for the #MZ700 #emulator

  15. A nice bit of Saturday afternoon progress on the Pico #MZ700 emulator. Colour output has been working for some time and I now have a reasonable USB to MZ700 keyboard mapping sorted as well.

    Next up - I need to sort out timings (can this really emulate a 3.5MHz MZ700 on a Pico, or will a Pico2 be required) and the banked memory implementation. This is, of course, a completely different implementation to that used on the MZ-80A.

    #Sharp were nothing but (in)consistent with the MZ series machines!

  19. I'm not able to take part in #RetroChallenge this year, but I've just spent a few minutes enjoying last year's writeup of my #Sharp #MZ80K emulator for the #RaspberryPiPico . In the weeks after the challenge it went on to emulate the #MZ80A as well. The plan for this winter is to have a bash at #MZ700 emulation. The architecture isn't hugely different from the earlier MZs, but I'll need to implement colour output as a minimum.

    Why would someone make something like this? I'm glad they did though. It's fifteen minutes long, made for a pair of Japanese Sharp-produces home computers. Note that the proper name for this is not ASCII-art, as it makes heavy use of Japanese characters.

  26. New blog post! I've been hunting for one of these for a long time, but anything I buy for myself is going to need some work (otherwise, what's the point?) Come watch me fight tapes, plotters, power supplies, monitors, and my own inability to read documentation to get this battered Sharp MZ-700 up and running again.

  28. I'm not a huge fan of cassette tape drives in general, but this MZ-700 needs my help. All the belts are there, power is present, but the play button doesn't make it turn. What's going on? I'd probably know by now if I could figure out how to take the motor board out. #retrocomputing #sharpmz #mz700

  30. The MZ-700 is back on the road after a small power supply repair. Nice! Now just to figure out how to get it to load arbitrary code. There's a whole jungle of MZF/MZT loaders that I'll have to try. #sharpmz #mz700 #retrocomputing #retrocomputer

  34. So I wanted to mount the replacement gears on the ALPS plotter of the #Sharp #MZ700, but it turns out these need to be pressed on.
    I'll have to go to the hardware store tomorrow and find a clamp that I could use/mod.

    Hopefully these will work, I got them from a medical supply company.
