  1. Another unwanted data center being rammed through without public input? It's more likely than you'd think. This time your local opposition are leading the charge to hold our government to task.

  5. Random memory / observation...

Here in #Saskatchewan, we have lots of place names that are memorable or unusual (for English speakers) or just plain odd [1]. Some, like the province's name, are just anglicized words or phrases from various First Nations languages (flavours of Cree, Dene, and others). Others are English translations of such phrases, which may sound odd to native English speakers. Occasionally this oddness gets them used in various contexts, like in Weird Al's "Canadian Idiot", where he says "Eat their weight in Kraft macaroni, and dream of driving a zamboni all over Saskatchewan".

The random recollection is of a game I used to play on the Amiga computer back in the late 80s or early 90s. I don't recall its name, but it was a driving/racing game of some sort. One of its levels was called Moose Jaw, which is one of our memorable place names (a mid-sized city and home to a Canadian Armed Forces air base).

The funny part is that the level included towering cliffs, jungle, an enormous waterfall ... anyone who's been to southern Saskatchewan will now be chuckling to themselves. I guess the Swedish developer (IIRC) just thought it was a good, unique name. I doubt he or she had ever been here.

[1] For example, we have towns for both #Elbow *and* #Eyebrow.

  6. β€˜Ambitious’ $485M project could make Moose Jaw an AI powerhouse

As a promotional video put it, the former Valley View Centre site β€” dubbed β€œCarpere Valley” β€” could become β€œthe fastest-growing tech hub in the world.”

Moose Jaw could become a major artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse in Canada and be the country’s first β€œAI wellness town,” as part of a proposed $485 million redevelopment of the former Valley View Centre site.
