  1. “As I looked out into the night sky,
    across all those infinite stars,
it made me realise how insignificant they are.”
—Peter Cook

(Russell Brand in “My Booky Wook 2007”, nicely misquoting Peter Cook.)

  3. Real phrases I've heard from one person at work that are verbal "off by one" errors:
    Nip it in the butt.
    In the mist of.
    One full swoop.

Makes me roll my ears every time. I just want intelligent discourse!

  7. "J. Robert Oppenheimer: We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita; Vishnu [a principal Hindu deity] is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now I have become death, the destroyer of the worlds.” I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

Charles L. Critchfield: That famous saying that Oppenheimer made when the bomb finally went off—“I have become death, the shatterer of worlds.”—it’s always said that it’s a quotation from the Gita, but of course it isn’t, because it’s in English. I looked through these three volumes of Gitas for that line and it’s there. But it’s very different from the way Robert says it. Chapter 11 is called “The Book of the Manifesting of the One and Manifold.” In Verse 12 of that chapter, it says, “If a thousand suns should at once blaze up in the sky, the light of that mighty soul would be all their brightness”—the “mighty soul” being God, of course. In Verse 31 of that chapter, the soldier Arjuna says, “Tell me, you awful form, who are you?” Krishna says, “I am time, destroyer of worlds.” The word “time” is the Sanskrit word “karma,” which is used in a sense that means “Father Time” and, therefore, can be associated with death and with the Supreme Deity. I suspect Robert made up his own [translation] because he read Sanskrit. I wouldn’t put it past him to have rehearsed this saying so that he’d be prepared to be dramatic, because he liked to be dramatic."

  9. CW: Discussion of Israeli politics in relation to Palestine and Lebanon; mention of genocide

Sorry I think I just threw up in my mouth

This all started when I stumbled across the phrase ‘I am not a Jew with trembling knees’ in a Tumblr post shared with the attached image. The phrase sounds pretty cool in the context of standing up against antisemitism, especially nowadays. That is, until I looked it up and learned of its deep sociopolitical implications.

I quickly stumbled across an op-ed by Steve Frank published on 17 May 2020 by the Jewish News Syndicate, a conservative (right-centre leaning) and outspokenly hawkish Israeli news agency with mixed factual reporting and moderate credibility according to Media Bias Fact Check. I'm well aware that what I had stumbled across was gonna be cringe-worthy but it’s something else when you see it laid out like this in a major Israeli news agency.

Israel’s proposed action in the West Bank is lawful, pragmatic, and designed to break the peace process deadlock as even the director of Pipes’s own Middle East Forum has effectively argued [in an op-ed from The Hill]. Pipes’s hysterical and speculative fears, spread by The New York Times, have been met with swift rebuttal [in an op-ed by the JNS and a column in The Jewish Press]. Pipes’s view stems from the deep-rooted but misguided galut (diaspora or exile) mentality that if only Jews do not upset the goyim [gentiles; people who aren’t Jewish], they will be left in peace. Such a delusional belief should have been buried in the Holocaust, and it is disturbing to see it raised again by a distinguished Jewish commentator.

The Jewish claim to Judea and Samaria goes back at least 3,000 years and is supported by literary, historical and archaeological evidence. In 1967, the State of Israel legally acquired territory in Judea and Samaria in a defensive war after being attacked by Jordan, which had itself been illegally occupying the land for the past 20 years. Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria are lawful and consistent with international law, as the U.S. government recently underscored [when on 18 November 2019 former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repudiated a 1978 State Department legal opinion that Israeli settlements in West Bank violate international law. The policy was later reinstated by Secretary of State Antony Blinken on 23 February 2024].

    There’s a lot of red flags here…

If you're really that interested in the original article, you can find it pretty easily through your preferred search engine. I won't be sharing a link.
