  1. Ever heard of "One-Dimensional Chess"? ♟️

Originally conceived by the legendary Martin Gardner in 1980, this minimalist variant is played on a single 8x1 row. Each side has just a King, a Knight, and a Rook.

Despite the simplicity, it has surprising strategic depth. Can you find the forced win for White in 5 moves?

  3. My constant study.

    Sidenote:
in 1995 the Euro was still the ECU
and 1,000 Italian lire were about one Deutsche Mark
(which became about half a Euro).

  5. @anathema_device
    2/2
And folk getting out over their skis:
" 2021 review .. ashwagandha ...“small but significant effect on overall sleep”
    vs
Musgrave, “Is there any point in buying expensive supplements with the possibility of getting liver damage when there’s no really significant benefit to be had?”

Sometimes skeptics seem to lack rigor.

And do avoid heavy metal intakes.

Biographical history, as taught in our public schools, is still largely a history of boneheads: ridiculous kings and queens, paranoid political leaders, compulsive voyagers, ignorant generals, the flotsam and jetsam of historical currents. The men who radically altered history, the great creative scientists and mathematicians, are seldom mentioned if at all. -Martin Gardner, mathematician and writer (21 Oct 1914-2010)

  10. Machine learning with matchboxes: A journey from a childhood game to… | Pavel Anni

I was a huge Martin Gardner fan during my teenage years – I still have the books and almost a complete set – so I was delighted to find my former Sun colleague Pavel Anni recapping the essentials of machine learning through an old “mathematical recreation” of matchboxes and beads:

  11. End of May reading...
I'm wondering how much more interesting would be this book if it were updated with the latest scientific disinformation in the era of internet.
This book was written in the 50s.
