  1. Watching another video with Mark, this time about luck.

    It goes for nearly 4 hours. Yes you read that right. He'll be lucky if I get through this one.

    There are days when I feel I've been so very very lucky. There are days I feel that I'm out of luck entirely. There are good days and bad days.

    Anyway. His concept is that there are different kinds of luck, and that's what matters. One kind is outside your control (like being born rich or not), but the other two are in your control. How you respond to your opportunities.

    Heaven Luck / What you started life with
    Earth Luck / The city you choose to live in
    Human Luck / How you play your cards

    So this will be interesting.

    But first, he wants to delve into fairness. Because we are wired to expect that everyone benefits according to their effort. If we each do the same work, we expect the same pay. When we perceive someone else as "lucky" it's a way to explain when something isn't "fair".

    Western culture had a big hole in this regard. We don't deal with random luck so well. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and we struggle to accept this.

  2. He says he spent his entire career going down the rabbit hole on this and digging into the philosophy...

    And he ended up with Aristotle. It was all there since ancient Greece. Just read Aristotle and you're golden.

  3. Hey has a nice way to look at how we develop as humans. Simple starting point...

    Childhood = Wanting things
    Adolescence = Getting Things / Transactional
    Adulthood = Acceptance

    We move through these phases, but sometimes we can get stuck or revert.

    He makes the point that living life in a transactional manner is ultimately unsatisfying, even if we are getting what we want. For example, my relationship with the barista is that he makes me coffee and I pay him. That doesn't make the barista my best friend.

    When we start making unconditional offerings to people, that's when we signal a deeper connection. I made dinner for my wife last night because that's what she wanted. I don't need something in return, indeed I felt great being able to do something for her and being useful and making her happy when she was so tired.

  4. This is a really interesting fella. He's the second person I've encountered recently to talk about the idea that "affirmations" don't work.

    He says they only make you feel better if you already believe them. For those folks who really need to feel better about themselves, affirmations are just standing in front of a mirror telling themselves things they know isn't true. The entire process only reminds them that they don't believe it.

  5. When you chase happiness, you don't enjoy the journey.

    When you accept suffering, you enjoy the acceptance.

  7. "Do you welcome our new 'AI' overlords?"

    #GuyonEspiner

    "[Laughs] I do. I feel like 'AI' will inevitably reach a point where it can, maybe, solve some of these intractable cultural issues. And, make people feel seen and heard enough that they don't, you know, vote for Trump and storm the Capitol."

    This is *comedy*! I am in critical danger of busting a gut laughing. Of course, when they say "AI" I'm hearing "#MOLE Training" 🤣

  8. Competence is how good you are when there is something to gain. Character is how good you are when there is nothing to gain. People will reward you for competence. But people will only love you for your character.

  10. “We don’t always control what happens to us. But we always control how we interpret what happens to us, as well as how we respond.” #TheSubtleArtOfNotGivingAFuck #MarkManson

  11. "It turns out that adversity and failure are actually useful and even necessary for developing strong-minded and successful adults. It turns out that teaching people to believe they're exceptional and to feel good about themselves doesn't lead to a population of Bill Gates and Martin Luther King. It leads to a population full of Jimmy's [deadbeats]." #TheSubtleArtOfNotGivingAFuck #MarkManson

  12. This rich white guy in 'The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck' doesn't see his privilege. He has some good (obvious) points, but he's a trust fund kid. #MarkManson

    "Lord grant me the confidence of an average white man."

    And no, pain does not make you stronger, that feeling is a coping mechanism, drilled into us to keep us working. The holocaust was not "good" for people. OMG!

    Some day he might face real trauma or pain. But I doubt it.

  13. “Life is essentially an endless series of problems. The solution to one problem is merely the creation of the next one. Don’t hope for a life without problems. There’s no such thing. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems.” ~ #MarkManson
