IN 1823, JOHN WORK AND PETER SKENE OGDEN travelled up the Athabasca River west of #LacLaBiche #Alberta, in two canoes. They were on their way to the west side of the Rocky Mountains. It was really interesting to discover where the old express trails led, and for me this was a fabulous exploration of our west of the mountains history. #YorkFactoryExpress #AmWriting #History https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/two-canoes-twelve/

I have spent so little time north of #yeg despite having lived here basically my whole life. So it was a pretty special treat to spend the weekend at Lac La Biche.
The lake is really beautiful, and we took a short hike around Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park where we heard and saw about 20 species of birds. Might have even got some photos of some including boreal chickadees (need to pull them from the camera still).

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1826:
"At 9.15 we passed Moose Creek, a small stream falling in on the North Bank. I am told it communicates with a Lake of the same name & then by making a few Portages thro' a chain of small Lakes we get to Beaver River, which communicates with the Athabasca #LacLaBiche. At 4 pm we passed the ruins of Fort George, an old fashioned Establishment situated on the right or North Bank. The Country along the South banks of the River... #AmWriting #CanadaHistory #Books
