"The construction of concentration camps was inspired by a similar policy developed by British colonies during the South African War" (the Second Boer War, 1899 – 1902).
https://allthatsinteresting.com/shark-islandTo show willingness to use violence and terror, the Nazi regime created concentration camps often situated in suburbs of major cities. The first of these camps was opened at Dachau, near Munich in Bavaria, in March 1933.
Eight years later, the aim of the extermination camps was genocide: to murder and annihilate Jews and Roma. Chełmno was the first extermination camp to be established in December 1941. The Nazi regime decided to locate all six extermination camps in Poland.
