  2. Built in Agde, France, by an unlikely, opium-smoking inheritor of ‘ultimately fatal genius’, Château Laurens is a surreal temple of dreams

Emmanuel Laurens (1873–1959) unexpectedly inherited a vast fortune from an elderly cousin, the Baron de Fontenay. The will – revealed after a ‘Homeric legal battle’, according to one source – bequeathed to Laurens warehouses in Ceylon and Africa, a quay in Marseilles and 20 million old francs. His life upturned, the Frenchman decided to visit Egypt, Madagascar and Aden via St Petersburg to witness a French state visit to the court of Alexander III.
