This makes me very happy indeed. BTW, the new Hungarian Health Minister, who went 'viral' for his dancing on election night, is Zsolt Hegedűs, an orthopaedic surgeon who, among his many achievements spent 10 years working in the NHS in England. He also was a prominent member of Hungarian doctors who campaigned against the so-called 'hálapénz ' or gratuity system where Hungarians pay doctors in cash for better medical treatment and services. So, a thoroughly decent person who knows a think or two about health matters. And so great to see Karikó playing a role in Hungary's health policy.

@severud @blogdiva my book just arrived. It's going to be my main reading at the end of this year. Thanks for the original post about Katalin Karikó and to point out the book!

'Not of faculty quality': How #Penn mistreated #NobelPrize-winning researcher 🧬 Katalin Karikó 🧬
It’s not about the lack of vision to recognize the Micheal Jordan sized talent potential.. it’s simply about not treating people shitty.

@glasspusher @tayfonay @zacchiro @jacobin One needs to look no further than the winner of the Nobel Prize in medicine, Dr. Katalin #Karikó for your second point. She was shunned by her university for taking the slow and steady path to very important research, she was relegated to a second class citizen of the university, and then the university tried to take credit anyway.

C'est quand même pas tout à fait ça, #AnneLHuillier a fait une quinzaine d'années de recherche en France, et #PierreAgostini plus de 35...
En matière d'opération de com', celle de #UPenn sur #Kariko est franchement plus problématique.

Although outraged as everyone by the career path Katalin #Karikó has had to take, I feel that the idea that early papers should have been in #Nature is in a way sticking to a known fallacy, an expectation that this system of supposed detection of impactful #research years in advance could work.
What we have is rather a proof that it doesn't and can't work, and that basing the hiring/tenure/grant decisions on these HI journal decisions is plain stupid.

The University of Pennsylvania, where Kariko was on track for a professorship, decided to pull the plug on her when her grant rejections piled up.
"I was up for promotion, and then they just demoted me and expected that I would walk out the door," she told AFP in an interview from her home in Philadelphia in December 2020.
Kariko didn't yet have a green card and needed a job to renew her visa. She also knew she wouldn't be able to put her daughter through college without the hefty staff discount.
She decided to persist as a lower-rung researcher, scraping by on a meager salary.
It was a low point in her life and career, but "I just thought...you know, the (lab) bench is here, I just have to do better experiments," she said.
Now, her pioneering work—which paved the way for the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines—has won her the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Guess one journal who rejected the seminal paper by Karikó and Weissman showing RNA could be used to make vaccins?
(yes, of course it was Nature)

What has really stuck with me, was just how profoundly proud he was of her accomplishments and how supportive he was. I also recall his concern about the already strenuous travel schedule that she was doing as her work had taken off. Being a #Scientist is a tough career and also for the family and spouses who support us. I am grateful every day for my wonderful partner Amanda, and I am grateful today for Béla Francia and how clearly supportive he was for his family. 2/x

Life is funny sometimes. In the fall of 2021 I ended up chatting with my neighbor on a flight from Frankfurt to Philly. He asks what I do for work. I said that I wrote software for the analysis of #RNA modifications by #massSpectrometry. He seemed impressed, and asked if I was familiar with the work of Katalin #Karikó. I told him "of course". He very proudly responded "I'm her husband" and pulled out a photo of them together with their daughter and the king of Spain. 1/x

Interview with fresh Nobelist Katalin Karikó in Dutch. Incredible stuff about her work being ignored, her getting demoted and even fired:
“
In 2013 she was even fired by the university of Pennsylvania: “I hadn’t been granted funding in 17 years. They offered me a position with animal testing. Unacceptable to me, as it wasn’t a lab. So I was removed”
“Within a decade mRNA vaccines saved millions of lives!
