  3. On Hatsuuma many communities would hold festivals dedicated to oxen, horses & silkworms...part of larger celebrations to pray for good harvests.

    In the Edo period children would enter terakoya (寺子屋-temple schools that taught reading and writing to commoner children) on this day.

    On November 23rd a small group of armour-wearing men and women parade through the grounds of Kamigamo-jinja (上賀茂神社) to pay their respects to the shrine gods as part of the 'Yoroi Kizome-shiki' (鎧着初式 'First Wearing of Armour Ceremony').
