Shimogamo-jinja (下鴨神社), because of its links to Emperor Jimmu, puts great effort into celebrating National Foundation Day, with displays of Kendō (剣道) and Kemari (蹴鞠).
Kemari is very much like a ritualistic form of keepie-uppies.

In its traditional form, mitarashi dango is made up of 5 small rice dumplings...skewered, grilled, and served with a sweet soy sauce glaze.
Legend has it that the inspiration for the snack came from a miraculous incident involving Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇 1288-1339).

💦MITARASHI MATSURI👣
From July 18th-27th (9am to 8pm) Shimogamo-jinja will be hosting the Mitarashi Matsuri (御手洗祭).
Over 10 days thousands will wade into the ice-cold waters of Mitarashi Pond (御手洗池) to offer candles, rid themselves of impurities and recharge their spirits.

🍵HUNTING FIREFLIES✨
Each year Shimogamo-jinja (下鴨神社) holds a special tea gathering called 'Hotarubi-no-Chakai' (蛍火の茶会). Over 600 fireflies are released beside the Mitarashi-gawa (御手洗川) as evening falls, bringing an otherworldly feel to the tea ceremony.

The pond belongs to Inoue-sha (井上社 'Shrine over the Well'), enshrining the god of purification 'Seoritsu-hime' (瀬織津姫命).
After wading, people partake of the spring water as it is believed to guard against sickness🥤🙏The festival first began in the Edo period.

In response the emperor had special rites performed at the Kamo shrines (賀茂神社 - the current Kamigamo-jinja and Shimogamo-jinja) and miraculously the crisis abated.
Over time the rituals grew into a larger, two-week celebration, including horse races and a sumptuous parade🏇

Inoue-sha (井上社) first stood at the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers (鴨川/高野川).
Destroyed during the Ōnin War (応仁の乱) in 1470, it moved to its current position (close to Shimogamo-jinja's main hall) in 1592.
It came under the direct management of Shimogamo in 1629.
