  3. CW: hunger strikers

I'm thinking about the hunger strikers. Sadness, because it does look like they're gonna die, and that if they survived they'd have lifelong damage. Respect for them, and not for the government refusing to negotiate. Obviously the govt disagrees with them but that's what discussion is for. We should be treasuring people of such integrity and courage, not squandering their life force to prop up a genocide.

And they shouldn't even be in prison this long without a trial, either. That's completely unacceptable.

Also thinking of Timpson's comment about how the prison service has lots of experience of hunger strikes. Yeah, of people refusing food for a day or two. Is he going to concede that this is a completely different thing? Is he going to concede that he's out of his depth?

  8. So Timpson finally turned up on Sky News yesterday evening.

And sad to say, after 6 months in government, he's totally gone native.

Gone are the days when he talked about many people in prison not needing to be there in the first place. I literally lost count of the number of times he said "we need to build more prisons".

    Such a disappointment.

  13. Whatever happened to James Timpson? You know, the guy who famously said that 2/3 of UK prisoners don't need to be in prison? The guy who Starmer hired as prisons minister?

I guess they decided just to build more prisons instead of looking at why we are locking up so many people in the first place.

A more expensive and socially destructive policy, but I'm sure it will play well with the right-wing press.

    That's the important thing, right?

  18. James Timpson's maiden speech in the House of Lords was a breath of change after the bile and hatred from the Tories over the past 14 years.

What is important is that he speaks from deep experience about the matters of which he speaks, not the ignorance, trite prejudices, posturing and ideology exhibited by the Tories.
