  1. Guess who's finally remembered to haul the box with the laminator.

I love laminating. It's so fun! And shiny! And you get high off the fumes! 🥴

Since I can't remember anything and can't read the Japanese manual either, I have made service quick references for the tractor. Also a map of the grease points, as there's quite a lot and its easy to forget some.

And the electrical diagram, of course.

As handy for keeping grubby farmer/mechanic paws off the paper as it was for keeping saltwater off the Mayday radio Cliff notes.

  6. Was down in the valley collecting some junk because I wanted that steel cage. No idea what it was used for, not an animal cage, too big gaps.

I want to stand it up and use it as steel storage shelf.

Also a tractor tyre that was "stored" there in the forest. The tyre escaped down the hill and rolled into the front of the Iseki, which promptly fell off. Yes, the front fell off. No, that's not supposed to happen.

It was just held with some flimsy plastic nubbins, which someone had already cobbled back together with bits of copper wire. Not a great solution, so I drilled some holes, cut threads and now its held with two stainless steel bolts, which should make sure the front doesn't fall off again.

  7. Found a steering wheel from a Golf II in the tractor parts shed. So Iseki got an upgrade.

It's slightly smaller and slightly higher than the original, which suits me, as I'm not a small Japanese rice farmer, which is who these excellent tractors were designed for.

More space for my legs and easier to slip in and out of the seat. Also very comfy grip 😆

Needed to scrub it quite a bit, as the previous users handcheese had come alive. The steering wheel is stamped from 1988, slightly newer than the tractor.

  12. Tractor repair in the dark. Iseki was making some screeching noise when revving up, which I assumed was the alternator belt, not unusual when it gets cold and just needing more tension.

So I popped the hood only to find it wasn't the belt. Then I noticed when the screeching happens, the tachometer needle would go crazy.

Luckily I'm old and remember stuff from before digital everything. Found the one "cable" going from the dash that was not a cable, but a flexible shaft in a tube, driven by a gear on the injector pump.

Undid it and pulled out a flexible shaft that hadn't seen any lubricant in 40 years. Cleaned it a bit, hosed it down in silicone oil and back it went, now happy and no longer screeching.

  13. Time to wake up that thing. Actually well late for it.

After planting potatoes this year and then digging them up and bending over an extra 8192 times to pick out all the steel, plastic, bricks, concrete and rocks, it's a LOT better this year.

Hit only one brick. Last year it was all bumps!

Also went and leveled some of the mess under the tree from the failed experiment in agroforestry and then did a surface pass through the orchard to break up the shallow Virginia creeper roots, which worked wonderfully - without bothering the deep apple tree roots at all.

As usual, a polite reminder: Don't fucking #Plasticulture, motherfuckers. That shit stays in the ground long after you're dead. :blobcattableflip:

  18. This kind of detail makes me very happy. Someone gave a fuck when they designed this.

The bolt is recessed so it doesn't poke into the rubber mat that goes on top, but because water can go there, they put a drain hole next to it, so it doesn't stay trapped in the recess forever and rusts the bolt.

  19. Short work day because morning shenanigans in town, but then I retrieved the rotavator from the tractor barn. Fixed a few small problems and greased all the things, as it was nicely painted but not a drop of grease anywhere.

Some studying of Japanese manuals (translated) and wrestling the thing on and off the 3PH twice and then... magic!

Turning the concrete field into fluffy garden soil. At sunset, sadly, so just a quick test run.
