They were close to finalizing guidelines for airborne infection control in hospitals, including the use of N95 masks.
Hospital acquired COVID has a 10% mortality rate. We’re seeing the worst measles outbreak in a decade. Drug resistant fungus is on the rise.
Cutting the people whose sole job was to reduce hospital acquired infections will just lead to more death, disability and healthcare worker attrition.
This isn’t how you eliminate the chronic disease epidemic, it’s how you eliminate the chronically ill.

Ok, the #HICPAC website still says tentative for March 6-7, but over email they tell me:
The March HICPAC meeting has been delayed to allow sufficient time for public comment and for HHS and CDC to set up a process for review and prioritization of the agenda.
Updates will be posted on the HICPAC website. -
Hmm, the CDC #HICPAC website says they will have a meeting March 6-7, in a few weeks. But there's no agenda and the deadline for the public comment lottery is not given on the site.
I know that RFK Jr has indefinitely postponed the ACIP meeting.... Has anyone heard about HICPAC? -

Not sure what to think about the fact that both the Zoom meeting (for public commenters) and the public stream (on Youtube) showed only a timer during the public comments.
In a previous written public comment to #HICPAC, I criticized the members who were checking email during the public comment period. IDK if they have stopped *doing that* but they certainly stopped *showing that*

#HICPAC is meeting August 22. I imagine, but don't know, that the "Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings" will be discussed. I contacted them to ask for an agenda.
The Submission Period for Requests to Make an Oral Public Comment is July 26, 2024, through 11:59 p.m. August 12, 2024.

So many thoughtful and articulate people, some sharing tragic stories of nosocomial COVID infections, and some sharing inspiring examples of how they are "living with COVID" by using airborne-oriented NPIs to make their spaces and interactions safer.
And I've just skimmed a few pages. The written public comments run from page 111 to 729!!!!

What’s wrong with HICPAC’s draft?
HICPAC’s draft guidance is aimed at frontline nurses and other health care workers, rather than health care employers, inappropriately shifting responsibility and risk to individual workers to protect corporate profits. The focus of HICPAC’s draft is almost exclusively on personal protective equipment, and it fails to make strong recommendations on other essential measures, such as ventilation and patient screening and isolation. Issues include (more details attached):
The draft fails to fully comprehend the science on aerosol transmission of infectious diseases and remains overly focused on short vs far range transmission. It maintains the existing, disproven droplet-airborne paradigm and rolls back existing practice on using airborne infection isolation rooms for novel pathogens.
The draft treats surgical masks as respiratory protection and PPE for health care workers exposed to infectious disease transmitted through the air and treats surgical masks as the default level of protection, reserving N95s/other respirators for only specific “special” circumstances.
The draft is written in a manner that maximizes “flexibility” for employers, not protections for health care workers and patients.What’s next?
This is not the end of the process. HICPAC’s vote sends their draft to the CDC for review. CDC reviews, then posts in the Federal Register for public comment before sending the document back to HICPAC for a final vote. NNU is urging the CDC to reject HICPAC’s draft and to actively engage the input of frontline health care workers, patients, and public health experts in developing a new draft (including holding public meetings).
What can I do?
Don’t forget to submit your written comments to HICPAC, letting them know issues with their draft. Yes, they already voted, but it is still important to share your thoughts on why their proposals are harmful and weak. Written comments are due Mon. Nov 6.
HICPAC’s directions for submitting written comments:
The written public comment period will open November 1, 2023, and will close at 11:59 p.m., EDT on November 6, 2023. Comments should be submitted in writing by email to the HICPAC inbox at [email protected]. All requests must contain the name, address, and organizational affiliation of the speaker, as well as the topic being addressed. Written comments should not exceed one single-spaced typed page in length. Written comments received in advance of the meeting will be included in the official record of the meeting.

More public comment, with the intro that comments should be directed at individuals or make people feel at risk because of their public service.
This is what I meant yesterday when I said, it's a pity that #HICPAC members see the timer counting down instead of the public commenter.
(I assume that the screen in the room shows the same thing that the Zoom window on the Youtube broadcast shows.)
