  1. 22 years ago, I invested in a #HermanMiller #Mirra office chair for my studio.

It seemed like a lot at the time, but it really was the best thing I could have done for my back. My spine would be a wreck if I hadn’t.

Tens of thousands of studio hours later, the chair is in perfect condition mechanically … but I’ve replaced the armpads twice,

and while my back is fine, the *chair’s* back was showing its age. There was an 8-inch tear in the plastic mesh,

and the connecter for one of the rear supports had broken, forcing me to epoxy it in place.

I decided it was time to reinvest in the future, and replace the damaged parts.

Yesterday, I put on the fourth set of armpads, and replaced the old charcoal shadow-colored back with a spiffy new Citron version.

It took some doing … I had to take a chisel to the epoxy …  but the chair feels like it’s new again.

I hadn’t realized just how much the back support had been degraded; the aged plastic had gotten floppy, and the tear left it unbalanced.

But it feels great now! It really is like new, and my back can tell the difference. I’m hoping I can get another five or so years out of the seat assembly, and then I’ll replace it, too.

Herman Miller can consider me a very satisfied customer! IMHO, it’s far better to pay more up front for something that lasts, than to replace and throw away an inferior product every few years.

  6. OLD vs NEW

old: DXRacer (15. Mai 2018) ~7 years old
new: Refurbished Herman Miller Aeron Chair Classic (Graphit)
(I opted in for all possible features ^^)

my new chair has finally arrived after 2 month
    (not the fault of DHL!)

    it's missing:
    * lumbar support thingy
    * headrest (added by the company I ordered it)
They already said the will send the missing parts.

  7. Everyday I curse at this stupid fuckin' Chinese mesh office chair (by #Sihoo) I got some years ago. It's comfortable, but it's ridiculously fragile and brittle for something that costs ~1k MYR.

I can't stand leather, so I can only get mesh chairs - before this I used a different mesh chair by
#IKEA that was a lot more sturdy for a lot cheaper, but far less comfortable. I'll take this as a lesson tho to spend the extra k or 2 (or more) on a known-brand mesh chair like #HermanMiller or more realistically, #Steelcase.

They may cost (a lot) more but at least there's no question about their comfort/quality, and some of em even come with ridiculously long warranty periods like 12 years - for just 1k+ extra than some Chinese knock-off.

  8. New #HermanMiller #Embody working well so far, obviously it'll take a while to break in and learn how to adjust better.

And I've been lucky to avoid serious chair-related back problems so far (AFAIK; I do have some lower back pain, but likely due to posture and being wicked out of shape) — thus I don't expect the common story of "got an Embody and now my back's better!".

But I expect to hopefully /avoid/ or at least /forestall/ such issues now!

    Also it's very pretty.

  9. Good news: got to sit in a bunch of (used) office chairs today, including a #HermanMiller #Embody.

    Bad news: I got to sit in a #HermanMiller #Embody. 💸 🤑

Lots more research to do yet, and not a done deal, but now I understand why they get so many reccos (esp for us folks whose size/shape is way off the bell curve). #chairs #WFH

Honorable mentions: Steelcase Amia, Hon Ignition, Haworth Very, Humanscale Different World.

(Also, a /lot/ of office chair brands start with ‘H’. Why?)
