CW: Snake in the chicken run today.
It did not appear to have an ingested mice in it but it also made me wonder where the secret hole is that the mice and snakes are using to get in there. I haven't been able to find their latest hole. Maybe they tunneled further away from the prison walls this time...

Looks like snaky snek, the big gopher snake I caught the other day is hanging around. Went out to the back yard and found it hunting along the back wall where some of the salvage lumber is stored.
I really wish I had a mouse to feed it (sorry, mouse!). It would be fun to make friends with a big wild snake. How cool would that be? Go out in the yard and whistle like I do for the lizards and have a big ol' snake crawl up and hang out?

Big news today was seeing a 4 foot long gopher snake patrolling the yard! This one was quite docile when I picked it up. I should've taken more close-up photos. They can be bitey and sometimes will coil up in "strike" position, shake their tail, puff out their cheeks and try to convince you that they are in fact rattlesnakes.
This is a form of Batesian mimicry where, in this case, rattlesnakes went through the long evolutionary expense of developing both venom and signaling, then the gopher snake shows up in a Spirit Halloween "Dangerous Rattlesnake" costume and hopes you won't be able to tell the difference.
But this one was chill and after handling it for a few minutes I set it next to the house and it zipped through a hole into the crawlspace, the same place I had removed a rattlesnake from recently.

I had a friend helping in the garden today, then I gave them a lift to the chicken coop and let them explore the mouse tunnels.

#snakes nice Mother's Day surprise. Haven't seen a gopher snake in awhile. They are weclome visitors. Don't kill them. They eat rodents. #gardening #gophersnake. Before I noticed him he was laying flat but coiled and mimiced a rattlesnake to get me to bsck off. This one was about 3+ feet.

There were two baby flycatchers (Say's Phoebe) near where this snake was. One of the parent birds had been calling and I thought it was a cat around or just the chickens causing it. There's a stack of junk below the nest to prevent the cats (in the night mostly), but I didn't expect a snake could be an issue. Maybe this has always been a thing because they've seem to have lost the babies quite often it seems like.
It was escorted to the tall grass.

From a contact on the birdsite. 98% sure it's a gopher snake based on the head and no rattle. Rattlers have rattles, and they also have diamond shaped heads. Gopher snakes are good to have around, they eat rats and mice. Conejo Valley. #snake #GopherSnake

This young #RedShoulderedHawk found by a #GoodSamaritan was being attacked by a #GopherSnake (it most likely started the other way around). Through guidance over the 📞 the #brave finder was able to encourage the snake to release the hawk. After a full exam, no serious injuries. Here’s the little guy a few days later recovering from his traumatic experience. He did just fine & has been released back into the wild. He got a #SecondChance💚
