    Faith and religion

I've always seen faith and religion as two separate things. Faith is personal conviction, religion is someone else's convictions that are forced upon you.

If you haven't seen the (Dutch) film Simon, you should. Other than being a really, really good film, it also has the main character give us this wisdom:

Every form of organized religion is wrong.

I agree. Faith is fine, religion is (mostly) not. Let everybody think for themselves: a "moral compass" should be in your head, not in random ancient texts.

But if the gist of your holy scripture is to be nice to each other, to help those in need and to see all human beings as equal, several serious questions and doubts should pop up in your mind if an openly racist misogynist with a long list of convictions for crimes that also go against the Ten Commandments, says he is a true christian. Is he? And if so, are you?

    What would Jesus do?

Again, I'm an atheist, but I have absolutely no problem with telling people that face a moral question, to ask themselves "what would Jesus do?"

For me, Jesus wasn't an immortal deity who could walk on water, but simply someone who pointed out the same societal problems we see today: inequality, poverty, greed, abuse of power, hypocrisy... He wasn't the first or the last to do that either.

    Creeds on greed

Jesus was crystal clear about greed; this article, "What did Jesus say about greed?", explains it exactly like I see it.

That's pretty much the same as what Buddha teaches us, only the goal to reach is not a god or heaven, but enlightenment.

I like to see myself as a socialist, a concept that is based on the same ideas as those preached by Jesus and Buddha: help each other, and share. Capitalism is the opposite of that: grab what you can.

A true Christian can never also be a capitalist, at least not without an unhealthy dose of hypocrisy.

Although I've been a lifelong atheist, I was born and raised in a christian environment, and was taught much more about the Bible than I care for.

Maybe it's because I look at christianity from a distance, that I have a clearer picture of it than the "official", churchgoing believers. It seems that I, as a staunch non-believer, live my life much more according to biblical standards than they do.

For all their claims of being christians, the MAGA-cult doesn't seem to know the Bible very well. Their cult leader goes against most of the values in it, including at least half of the Ten Commandments. Adultery, stealing, lying and coveting for example...

And then there's Luke 12... Orange doesn't know that bit (I bet he's never ever read a single page of the Bible), and neither do his sheep. Or they have come up with their own exegesis to make it ok.

Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
    -- Luke 12:15

It's part of Parable of the Rich Fool, such an appropriate title...

And let's not even touch the parable of the Good Samaritan, I'm sure they're bending over backwards to twist that into a story about how minorities are robbers and thieves 🙄

  3. College student performs emergency CPR on unconscious man

"I figured I need to put others before myself, and so I just hopped out and did CPR."

A Dallas Baptist University student potentially saved an unconscious man's life after performing CPR on him this past Tuesday.

  5. William Howard van Doren, a Presbyterian minister, lingers over one detail in the Good Samaritan: he bound the wounds, likely tearing his own clothes. Love, van Doren says, repairs what sin destroys and asks not how little, but how much it can give.

Do we calculate the minimum, judging who deserves help? How will you restore what sin has ruined?

  6. Charles Spurgeon, the Baptist preacher, looks at the Good Samaritan and says, frankly, Jesus was being generous. One good person for every two who walk past? In real life the ratio’s far worse, unless you want a parable that never ends. The real sin is stepping around suffering.

Today we act shocked anyone gets hurt at all. So—maybe don’t walk on by, yeah?

  7. California Passes Bill Blocking Cities from Punishing Good Samaritans Who Offer Aid to the Homeless

California lawmakers have approved SB 634, a bill protecting residents' rights to provide food, water, and aid to unhoused neighbors without fear of fines or legal penalties.

  8. Just returned from visiting my 97 year-old stepDad this week in the Black Hills. Very nice trip, beautiful area the abrogated Laramie Treaty lands are. Big news is, the residents of his retirement village are anxious about fee increases coming, after a few years of mid single digit increases, all well above actual inflation rates, and this year many are expecting double digit increases. Some #GoodSamaritan system we got, right? Gonna force some olds out of their retirement home? #BigBeautifulBill

  9. Loving your neighbor means stepping out of your comfort zone and noticing those in need. Through games, prayer, and honest discussion, teens learn that small acts—like listening and showing compassion—reflect God's love. Jesus said, “Go and do likewise,” encouraging everyday kindness over grand gestures. Let’s see the world through God’s eyes and spread love and mercy every day. 🌿❤️ #LoveYourNeighbor #GoodSamaritan #EverydayKindness #YouthLessons young-catholics.com/70730/good

  10. Living out our faith means more than knowing God's Word; it's about action. The 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C reminds us to love and act with compassion, just like the Good Samaritan. Christ is the center of creation, and His teachings guide us to show mercy to everyone, especially those in need. Let's embrace small acts of kindness daily, embodying love for God and others. #FaithInAction #GoodSamaritan #LoveAndCompassion young-catholics.com/3601/15th-

  11. A quotation from The Bible

But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’
Jesus replied, “A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.
“But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on to his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said ‘and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.’
“Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands` hands?”
“The one who took pity on him” he replied.
Jesus said to him, “Go, and do the same yourself.”
