When dealing with human illnesses caused by pathogens, early detection is often the best way to fight back.

University of Wisconsin scientists have developed a DNA sensor system using B. subtilis bacteria genetically engineered to detect specific DNA sequences from pathogens and glow when encountered thanks to GFP genes.

They hope to use this to more easily detect developing infections in the human microbiome.
