    The industry-funded Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA) shared information with livestock companies about the romantic partners and even biological ties of those in animal rights organisations.

    Documents seen by DeSmog show that in one instance the group shared the location and a photo of an activist’s girlfriend with industry members who were passing intelligence to the local sheriff.

    Part funded by public money, the AAA created a database of over 2,400 individuals including those who simply “affiliate” on social media with animal rights groups. The database also included “suspicious individuals” at animal rights protests, and those who have tried to film or report on conditions at farms.

    “It’s a chilling intrusion into people’s private lives and constitutional rights,” said Ben Williamson of the animal rights organisation Animal Outlook, which is listed by the AAA as an “extreme” group.

    The livestock industry accounts for over 14 percent of all emissions worldwide, and scientific experts agree that it must rapidly transform to meet international climate obligations.

    DeSmog analysed hundreds of pages of leaked documents produced between 2015 and 2025. They provide a snapshot of the tactics used by the meat and dairy industry to undermine and discredit criticisms of the sector as it faces growing pressure to address animal welfare and environmental harms."

Here we show how GHG emissions from consumption and investments attributable to the wealthiest population groups have disproportionately influenced present-day climate change. We link emissions inequality over the period 1990–2020 to regional climate extremes using an emulator-based framework. We find that two-thirds (one-fifth) of warming is attributable to the wealthiest 10% (1%), meaning that individual contributions are 6.5 (20) times the average per capita contribution. For extreme events, the top 10% (1%) contributed 7 (26) times the average to increases in monthly 1-in-100-year heat extremes globally and 6 (17) times more to Amazon droughts. Emissions from the wealthiest 10% in the United States and China led to a two- to threefold increase in heat extremes across vulnerable regions. Quantifying the link between wealth disparities and climate impacts can assist in the discourse on climate equity and justice."

    The government boasts that its CCS scheme will be “the equivalent of taking around 4m cars off the road”. But at far lower cost, through a rational transport policy, it could remove millions of real cars from the roads, while improving our mobility, cutting air pollution and releasing land for green spaces and housing.

    It could also launch a programme for the mass restoration of nature in the UK. The rewilding of land and sea would draw down vast amounts of carbon from the atmosphere while simultaneously reversing our ecological catastrophe. All these are cost-effective ways of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. And all of them, unlike CCS, have “co-benefits”: they achieve more than one good thing."
