Fonts in games can have a world of issues, although in regards to subtitles, they are often easily fixable. But that's just one of many accessibility issues. There's also colourblindness, and as is the focus of this article, straight-up blindness.
So... have you heard about Games for Blind Gamers?

My entry for the #GamesForBlindGamers 4 jam: Boléresque! Solve the puzzle by rearranging the score of Maurice Ravel's Boléro. I only had time to make one puzzle, but I think it turned out pretty interesting! Please give it a try! :boost_requested:

Day 8 of #GamesForBlindGamers. Feeling good about the potential fun-ness of the puzzle mechanic. I don't want to spend too much time on visual polish, but I'm going to try to make the game deaf-accessible as well as blind-accessible, and to work on touch screens as well as with a keyboard or gamepad. The UI is a bit busy, but serves its purpose. Mysterious screenshot attached for #ScreenshotSaturday.

I'm participating in Games For Blind Gamers again this year! :yell: The jam runs all month, so you still have plenty of time to jump in!
It's a very interesting creative constraint to design a "video" game that doesn't rely on video! Plus you are helping to enrich people's lives, and it's a fun way to pass the long cold nights of February (or stifling hot evenings in the southern hemisphere). There's a wiki with advice on getting started, and I'm happy to provide suggestions, help, feedback, and moral support. :BlobCat_Hug:

Here's my #GamesForBlindGamers 3 jam entry: Glorpo's Jam-o Demo! You are Glorpo, an alien who operates a deep space salvage and rescue service. This career choice is a bit questionable, since you are a sticky blob creature with no arms or legs, but you'll try your best! :blobderpy:
Please give it a try and rate it for the jam! 🙇 It's best on a computer with a gamepad, but playable on touchscreen if you are sighted. Boost requested! :boost_requested:

Less than a week left in the #GamesForBlindGamers 3 jam! And I'm traveling next week so I need to get it pretty much finished this weekend!! I'm only slightly panicking!!! :blobpanic:
Actually, I'm in a good position and I'm confident I'll have something worth submitting. I work in passes, always keeping the game in a playable state, but growing and improving it little by little, so it's just a matter of deciding when to call it done. As always for game jams, I've been narrowing the scope of my ambition as the deadline approaches. I'm focusing on making one simple level, but relatively polished, like a demo for a full game. I've been making progress in leaps and bounds the past few days. I love Godot (most of the time), it's (usually) so quick and easy to get things done!

Spent the past couple days implementing the UI theme and Options screen for my #GamesForBlindGamers entry. I'm mostly satisfied with the theme, although I might add more magenta accents to make it less generic. 😎 🌈
I tried a tab bar for the Options screen, but I didn't like it, so I implemented a sidebar system. It was an interesting challenge to make sure it works right whether you use a mouse, keyboard, or gamepad.
Godot's UI and theme system is pretty awesome, and I have learned a lot about it!

The #GamesForBlindGamers 3 #GameJam is halfway over! Time to assess (and panic) how much progress I've made, what I have time to finish, and what I need to simplify or cut. 😦
I'm mostly happy with how far I've gotten. I've got a good design document and planning spreadsheet. Glorpo looks great and movement feels good, although I wish I had time to make Glorpo's body sticky so it could climb walls. I haven't implemented much audio or accessibility features yet, just planning. This is going to be a laborious game to make blind-accessible. Lots of accomodations to implement, and sound effects and audio descriptions to record. I should really check if Godot 3's text-to-speech feature still makes the engine freeze on Linux, and how well it works in browsers and on Windows.

Prototype of new twin-stick shooter for the Blind Gamers jam. Time moves when you move. Here you can see:
- Bullets stationary when you fire them
- They move at 0.1x speed when you turn
- They move at 1x speed when you move -

We're about one week into the #GamesForBlindGamers jam! Lots of progress by different devs so far, and quite a few accessibility challenges discussed and solved! It's a great way to learn about #a11y/#accessibility as a developer!

More-po Glorpo! I have a good idea now of what Glorpo's actions will be and how the gameplay will work. I spent like 15 minutes just watching Glorpo's googly eyes roll as I moved around. 👀 And another 15 minutes recording gross, wet, squishy sounds with my mouth. I may or may not have spit and drooled all over my phone. 👅💦 Who knows if the game will be fun to play, but at least I'll have fun making it! #GamesForBlindGamers #gamedev #Inkscape

Alright, I've committed to a concept for the #GamesForBlindGamers jam. Working title is Glorpo's Deep Space Salvage & Rescue. You are an alien who explores derelict human space vessels to recover cargo, rescue crew members, or repair the ship. Your career choice is a bit questionable since you are a sticky blob creature with no arms or legs, but you're gonna try your best!! :blobderpy:

The #GamesForBlindGamers 3 jam has started, a month-long chill game jam where you make a blind-accessible game:
https://itch.io/jam/games-for-blind-gamers-3
I'm not 100% sure I have enough energy/motivation lately to participate this time around, but I think I'll at least take a couple days to prototype before deciding. I went for a long walk this afternoon and had a ponder and came up with several game concepts that could be interesting.

Ahead of the #GamesForBlindGamers jam, I (co-)created a small Godot extension that allows you to integrate with the NVDA screen-reader, and send it things to say.

Please send encouragement for me to resume working on my blind-friendly music game. I tried to carry over the energy from the #GamesForBlindGamers jam, but I hit a snag and lost my momentum, and there's no external pressure/impetus/accountability like there was during the jam, so I've been neglecting it. I really want to finish it, but getting back in the saddle is tough. 😮💨

Absolutely floored by the #GamesForBlindGamers community. We now have a budding community of contributors looking at supporting blind-friendly games year round, mini-jams to explore tech and ideas, a list of blind-friendly game makers, and much more!

My new free game Ear Hacker is available! It's a cyberpunk hacking game that tests your aural training and rhythm skills! Sight not required! https://jcroisant.itch.io/ear-hacker-jam
This is my entry for the #GamesForBlindGamers 2 game jam. There are more features I plan to add and bugs to fix, but I'm very proud of what I accomplished in two weeks. Did I... actually make something kinda good??? :blobcataww:
Please give the game a try (mind the known issues list), share and boost, and rate it for the jam if you have an itch.io account. :blobcatheart: :boost_ok:
