My late evening started by powerwashing (both outside and resetting) an old #Acer C720P #Chromebook, and installing #chrx with #GalliumOS. That went smoothly for the most part.

Installing #Lem was a PITA. First I had to inform the installation script wth galliumos was, then I had to debug the 20 or so #qlot stack traces. For the love of #lisp.

I’m too tired now to play with it 🥱😴

@fugueish @carnage4life Chromebooks are quite capable machines, especially since they can run modern browsers. They are at least as capable as most mobile phones, with the added benefits of larger screens, physical keyboard and expansion ports.

The only barrier to running Linux or any other OS of your choice is a locked BIOS straight from the manufacturer. When the BIOS can be unlocked, there are many Linux distributions that support them like #GalliumOS (https://galliumos.org/)

Status Update on #corebootbook

I've been using the Dell Chromebook 11, freed from #Google with #coreboot as my primary laptop for at least three months.

It has a weak processor, only 4GB memory and 16GB of storage... yet it serves most of my needs for a mobile computer.

I'm running #Devuan #Linux, as that is the only Linux distro that I got everything working, including sound, on this laptop. Sound just wouldn't work on most other distros on this laptop (except the aging #galliumos ).

The 16GB storage limit is a bit annoying, as my Thunderbird email profile is quite large and would press the space limits of that 16GB drive. I may insert an SD card and configure Thunderbird so the profile is kept on an SD card.

So far, the #corebootbook works for what I need it to. I use it to log into my phone.com account while I am out and about, using a mobile hotspot for internet. I can keep up on business phone messages and not use a mobile phone (staying away from stock and OEM Android for #privacy reasons, but do occasionally use /e/ OS version of Android that is wifi only).

I may switch to a different faster laptop in the coming months, but the proof of concept for usefulness of the #corebootbook has been proven to me.

I plan to give a few more away to my subscribers. I also have some that I can sell, if someone wants to just buy one already set up.

Another boost of #Devuan in my estimation of it.

On the #corebootbook, onboard sound usually does not work. It works with #GalliumOS, which was designed for #chromebook hardware, but Gallium is getting old and isn't likely to see another release.

I was surprised to see that sound is working just fine on the #corebootbook in Devuan.

I'm not sure exactly why. Sound does not work on this laptop in #LInuxMInt, LDME5 or #VoidLinux.

But it is a pleasant surprise and makes me like Devuan even more.

I'm thinking about installing #void #linux on a corebooted Chromebook and experimenting more with Void, as I haven't used it much.

A desktop PC would probably be better, but I have a spare Dell 3120 that's ready for an installation of something. Either it will be the default #galliumos or Void.

I installed :void: #linux on a #coreboot Dell #chromebook last night. I think it's the first time I've installed void. It's install process is similar to #netbsd and I can see how void was inspired to some degree by #bsd.

I haven't used it much. Still learning how to use the xbps package manager and exploring the system.

I think there may be things built into #galliumOS that make the keyboard and trackpad work as they should. For sure that's with the keyboard, but I suspect the trackpad too.

How Ubuntu Brought This Chromebook Back from the Dead

“It’s alive! It’s aliiiiiive!” Alright, I’m not exactly Dr Frankenstein, but I did exhume the corpse of a forgotten Chromebook from its eternal resting place (my bookcase) to enact a macabre ritual. My goal? To bring it back to life. Thankfully I didn’t need any spare body parts or a maniacal god complex for my resurrection, just a few choice terminal commands and an Ubuntu-based Linux distro called Gallium OS. I’ll get to what Gallium OS is in a bit, but first I need to answer the question you’re probably thinking in your head: “Chromebooks run Chrome OS. It is :sys_more_orange:

@WallyHackenslacker @derek I really liked Ubuntu MATE 18.04 and used it for quite a while.

I still like and use some #Ubuntu derivatives, especially #LinuxMint, and I am typing this from #GalliumOS (neither of which come with Snap pre-installed)

I am moving away from official Ubuntu stuff and have been for a while.

I've been doing more with #coreboot on Chromebook hardware. Liberated an Acer C740 with the mrchromebox.tech firmware. Now that I know how to do it, it's almost easy. Can be intimidating until you successfully flash one, though.

I've flashed two Dell Chromebook 11 3120 laptops to coreboot now and planning on doing a few more soon. I've been using one with #GalliumOS and it has been working well. Battery life is long, Gallium is practical and works as expected (#ubuntu-based so familiar).

@10leej I replaced the original Google BIOS with #coreboot, so that allows me to install almost anything that runs on Intel processors. I just installed #galliumOS first, as that has some extra stuff to make it run better on Chromebook hardware right away (key mappings, sound drivers, et cetera).

Will eventually be experimenting with #BSD on this model, too 😃

@minimlr Which model of HP #Chromebook do you have? Are you still using #galliumOS or another #linux distro?

I was successful in flashing #CoreBoot to the Dell Chromebook 11 3120 laptop.

Now have #galliumOS installed and I'm testing it. So far, I'm impressed and liking it.

Okay performance for the specs and battery life is excellent.

Turns out you can make a chromebook usable just by removing the chromeos part. who knew.

It's been quite a while since I had a dedicated linux desktop.

Also #galliumos is also okay.
